160 or 190 Hp

I know this is sad.. but i need to know if my car has the 160 hp engine or the 190hp. i have a 94 maxima brougham edition. Can i check somewhere under the hood? or on the engine? is there something that makes it obvious. the car seems really fast. thanks

Wrong. 92-94 SE uses the VE30DE engine, which peaks at 190hp. All other 3rd gens use the VG30E, which peaks at 160hp.

Every engine pictured in this thread is the VE: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=553054, if yours looks different then its the VG... or else someone got real creative with your car

um try again. 92-94SE VE30DE is 190HP 10:1 CR 24v DOHC

but just because it's a 94 doesn't mean much. the 92-94 GXEs had VGs just like all 89-91s did regardless of trim.

I don't know much about the broughams since they were not USDM, but if your engine bay's ID plate says VE30DE then it's 190hp/190tq, if it says VG30E then it's 160hp/182tq

edit: mr kantor beat me to it

The bigg dffrence: bunch of blk spaghetti soot hoses -or- baked coilpack$. Here's The std Nissan Gutted Spaghetti:

... the ECCSpaghetti-server that makes it REAL VG30E (I hear some say eh 160hp?):

The blk hole above is also so called "original Nissan spark wire". Also the VGE hp is all wrong - after some minor adjustments. If you have that ECCS plastic cap on cap, then its VG30E, then this should be of interest: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/748507/12

The Brougham edition maxima's were only available in Canada, usually with maroon interiors, digital dash, digital a/c, sometimes a heads up display, sonar suspension, etc. They were high end GXE's and only came with the 160hp VG30E.

The VE was never produced as any other model other than the 92-94 SE.

Sorry buddy, VG30 sohc was rated @ 160 hp while the VE30 was rated @ 190 hp and was available since 92!
I'd never forget that! The 3rd Gen Maxima is when I fell in love with Maxima's. Car and Driver had an article featuring the Nissan Maxima SE vs Ford Taurus SHO... 190 hp vs 220 hp... 5 spd vs 5 spd...Guess who won?

sorry didn't know they correct him!

Having owned both the VG and VE, and being in Canada, the 'Brougham' is just a term used for car models that are 'fully loaded'. It's not Maxima specific. Many cars, including the Maxima were actually badged 'brougham' in chrome lettering on the trunk lid.

I've never seen a brougham VE here sams. It is likely a VG, but you've got pictures of engine examples above to determine that for sure.

mainly it just depends on your driving style as to which engine suits you best. the VG suits my driving style far better than a VE would, because i am almost always below 3500rpm, so if I were to have a VE i probably wouldn't like it. my friend, by contrast, would much rather have a VE than a VG because he likes to let the tach run a little higher, which is where the VE runs circles around the VG.

i love my rev's high too. but i'm all over the place though, lol
but the vg still meets my needs to that.
i think beucase of the "catbac" thats why.

my friend has a vg and when he drove mine he thought something was wrong with his.

but it's not.
i told him it may be because my engine was replaced (has less miles than his) and the exhaust upgrade.

For those too young to remember that 190 hp Maxima whipped that 220 hp SHO Taurus like a step child in pretty much every category!

i've had better luck with my VG's. the VE is fast but you don't want to buy parts for it.

Hmmmmm.... I've had my VE since early 2001 and I've put nearly 40K miles on it (has 161K on it now). Other then aftermarket parts I really haven't replaced many "parts". Consumables, lots! Tires, several sets. Otherwise, for the most part the SE has been pretty bulletproof.

Oh wait, I forgot the crappy manifold studs I had to replace, but that was like, what, $15-25 to repair, a weekend on my back, a case of beer and lots of F--- Bombs for my neighbors to hear?

Other OEM stuff that need replacing..... Wiper linkage, all 4 window regulators and the entire Bose system. But all this stuff is the same as the VG.

I had my first VE for 2 years (almost exactly) before it got booted and taken.
I'd probably have it still if it wasn't booted and towed.
I do regret selling VE4 though. but if I do an EJ25 swap I'll be past the VG in power with lower weight , AWD, split folding rear seats, auto up and down drivers window, and headlights that turn off with the car . Yes I like my 94 alot.
