Optima Battery Model

Hello! I want to install a Yellowtop on my Max and I was looking at the Optima website using their battery search function but they say no model is available for Maxima 89-94, I know some of you have installed this on the Max, even last time I went to Sears the guy told me only Redtop will fit on my 1990 SE, I don't buy that, so I searched the forums and couldn't find any info on yellowtops for the 3rd gens. Could any of you please tell me which model I should buy to install without making any mods or cable bending/stretching. I read that for the 4th and 5th gen they use the 75/35 or something like that. Is that the same for a 3rd gen? Thanks in Advance!

Look at CCA of stock battery. Look at CCA's of optimas. Get one that has similar ratings. Done. /common sense

I have and recommend the D34/78 yellow top with dual posts.

34 or 34R (former orange top) both would work.
the D34 above has dual terminals.

the diff between the 34 (more common) and 34R are their terminal locations. neg on left and pos on right...and then the R is reverse of that.

the stock wiring should reach either set up.

Thanks man, but I didn't ask for CCA's I know about that, I'm just concerned about size & terminals, so it's not just common sense, I ask here for someone that already have this installed and knows about the issues that I should care about, but I really appreciate your advice.

So, I think the 34R is the one right? because our cars have the + on the left, is there anything else I should be concerned about? like a bracket or something?

Jbr8k: did your D34/78 fits without any mods? I mean cable extensions or anything?

Thx

see here's the good part...if you turn the battery around you'll have the terminals on the correct side again...only difference is that the terminal is closer to the other side of the battery. we're talking like an inch or two here.

to get it to fit nicely you should ask for the battery tray/spacer on the bottom..that should get the battery sitting correctly. the optima is a little shorter than the stock replacement...but with the tray you should be good.

don't really worry about CCA...the optima CCA exceeds the stock rating..yellow, red, orange, blue will exceed the stock CCA #'s.

34R is the "correct" one...but they are difficult to find in some places and the more common battery is 34. it fits..but the battery label is flipped around and the terminals are slightly farther out...stock wiring should reach.

No mods to fit, I used the lower posts for the factory wiring and the top posts for the stereo.

yeah that would be a mod since it is a top post. sure you don't mean that backwards? i moded my POS connection to allow for several direct connections to it, similar to this one

it's not hard...but i think it would be quite difficult for "no mods" to the stock connector to fit a side post..no?

I think I have a D85 yellow top in mine. I'd have to double check though. But I have the antifeeze next to my battery unlike Loco7

Hey Thank you all for your replys! I bought today the D34 and I just Install it, it works great!!! It came with the height adapter so no problem for that, but I can't figure it out how to use two brackets that came with it, maybe these aren't for the Maxima I don't know, one is like a triangle and the other one have a semi-circle on the middle. I'm concerned that My new battery is loose, doesn't seem to move a lot but anyways I want to put a bracket on it.

Jbr8K: hey man, where did you get that black bracket? from optima? or maybe I should go to the local autozone/pepboys for a bracket like that?

One last thing, the user manual says something about charging the battery that I dont' really understand. There's nothing to worry about right? any battery is ok to just put it on your car turn it on and that's it, or I'm missing something here. I took out my old Batt, install this one turn my Max on (BTW it takes about 1/3rd the time to start than my old batt) I left the car on for about 1 hour and that's it.

Any autoparts store should have them. I did have my battery checked and charged before I installed it just to make sure.
