My Maxima = teh suck

Hey guys, got some questions for you all.

My car is a 92 maxima
engine VE30DE Turbo and Intercooled,
upgraded injectors, 300zx MAF, stock ECU

1.)The clutch is pretty worn as some of you know, so it has sat in front of my place for a couple weeks and the battery died a few days ago. I charged it up and drove it around for about 20-30 minutes just to charge the battery and such. I then parked it and left it for 2 days, then I tried to start it and it had 0 power, less than the last time I jumped it. Odd. So I jumped it and rolled out of the complex.

2.)I left it in first gear and ran it up to 4000-4500 RPM and a huge backfire/explosion could be heard and it was hell trying to keep it from stalling so I could drive it back to the complex, but it died at a stop sign. I jumped it again and drove it all of 20 feet back to the parking lot and it ran OK but white smoke was exiting the tail pipe, about as much as you would find running your car on a cold day. It also had a strong burning smell to it.

So did think I blew a head gasket?? Think my alt is crap??

Just so you know, I was off the boost and this was a very slow acceleration speed like 1 second per 1000 RPM rise.
I'll try to do a compression test tonight after work, also.

if your car runs, the alt is fine. If it starts then dies a few minuets after you start, then the alt is dead. The batterys job is to store egnough energy to start the car. The alt's job is to keep it running. It sounds like your battery is dead as when the car stalls it needs jumped, but it'll stay running for as long as you need right?

And it sounds like you had a backfire that pop'd the headgasket. If your going to just replace the headgaskets, dont leave that water in there! It'll rust the cylinders out and then you definitly need a new engine! My friend bought a Eclipse cheap, with a blown HG, and he left it sit for a few months, and the engine was filled with rust and other nasty crap, so get the engine clean asap.

And if the white smoke smelled sweet, its burning coolant and thats a blown HG.

How long have you had the car, and did you turbo it yourself?

About 2 months, put less than 5 tanks of gas since I got her to Kentucky.

Here she is:

You can get the battery and or Alt. tested/recharged free at most Auto Part Stores.

I hope it's not the head gasket and something minor.. Good luck.

Thanks guys. The alt isnt my main concern right now, the white smoke is.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but to fix a blown headgasket (if that really is all that is wrong) then I'm going to need:

Upper and Lower Intake gasket
Valve cover gasket front and rear
headgasket front and rear

Is there anything else, tools, etc...
I heard somewhere I will need a special tool to get the heads off.

I assume internetautomart.com is the best place to go may pick up another set of hood struts too.

I'm thinking that you now have a bad intake gasket.
run a compression check on all cylinders.
I doubt the blown head gasket.

it sounds like you are getign too much fuel and not enough air.... or you have an intake gasket problem.....one of your injectors may be clogged from sitting maybe?

BUMP!

Update:
I know a friend who's Dad knows a brother, who knows a friend who thinks he can remove my engine, tear it down, replace all the gaskets from the heads up and replace the clutch for 1G ($1000) parts and labor.

1.) Is this a good deal?
2.) Should I buy the parts myself? If so how much would labor run for a job like this?

I'd like to buy the gaskets from the resident parts-ore but I may buy the clutch kit local from a member of lexistreets.com cause I still don't really know what clutch to get yet.

Thanks guys

Edit: O I'll prolly be adding a new alt and battery to the mix as well. That should take care of everything.

Buy a clutch your self. You have a boosted max that needs a STRONG clutch, he may buy a stock one and pocket the money. Check out the other boosted 3rd gens and the FI fourm for clues on which one to get.

Water in oil? Oil in your water? Did you do the compression check as suggested? I might be off base, but my first thought was rings. Let us know what you find.

Good idea Alex_V, that would be a nasty surprise after 10k miles I'm sure.

No not yet Chris, work has been relentless, just this week I'll be putting in 7 12hour days in a row! However I have some time off coming up this weekend and will try my damn'dest to do the compression check. I'll post the results here so you guys can do a logic check on my findings.

Either way I won’t be able to pay for any of this till the end of next month

Is your maxima the one on streetfire?
http://videos.streetfire.net/search/...b2faebbe37.htm
Someone has a turbocharged ve on there but its listed as a 93..

Anyways all I know is check your oil for white gunk and check your antifreeze for bubbles or oil.

Yeah I've see that car on cardomain somewhere, looks like crap on the inside IMO, you can see some of if you look at his steering column, the way it's painted. nasty

Although my gauge cluster is just as nasty.

That sucks real bad. Did you contact the guy you bought it from? Or has he disappeared now that he's got the money?

The former owner was Maxtuned as known on the .org he has my money so he is good to go. Of course the car ran more or less perfectly when I test drove it, and of course he said that it was my driving that has brought all this out...whatever I've moved onto paying this beast off and fixing her at the same time. Not too sure how much longer my 89 is gonna hold together though

He does want to see the clutch when it comes out, so maybe he does care...

the 93 in the video is 93GXEturbo's.

What clutch did the car have in it? The FI guys seem to be raving about the centerforce 6 puck clutch.

it is still not up and running. I lost my job in Dec so I may have to sell it as is to help pay rent, but I doubt I could do that to her.

In other news it still smells nice on the inside.
