how to tell how many miles you get in a full tank
#4
our tanks are 18.5 gallons. You don't really want to push it down that far. Usually, if you go until the gas light is on it will refill to 16 or so gallons.
The best thing to do is buy a small notepad. When you go down near empty, fill it up and write down the gallons and reset the trip meter. Do the same thing every time for several fill ups and write down how many miles on the meter and how many gallons to fill it. You should be able to judge how many miles to a tank and what mpg you are getting.
On freeway trips, I can go well over 400 miles without worrying about running out and usually comes out to about 28-30 mpg. Mixed is more like 23-26 mpg.

What kind of question is this? Ever heard of a trip odometer? It won't be like the new BMWs and actually tell you what you want to hear, so just keep your eye on it and use your memory and a conservative estimate afterwards.

The EPA ratings when the cars were brand new were 21 city/26 hwy for the 5-speed and 19/26 for both the VE auto and the VG auto.

Write it down your mileage when you fill up on your gas reciept and then next time you go do the same. Then just subtract and divide. Save your reciepts and average them over time.

the key issue here is the record your miles travelled and the amount of fuel purchased...
you CANNOT depend on the fuel gauge to tell u how much fuel is in ur tank...it is a crude estimate. remember that tanks are not perfect cubes and are very irregular shapes and forms. so to calibrate a fuel level sender to accurately relay the fuel level is very difficult.
just to repeat what has been said -
fill ur tank up - don't top it off..just fill till the pump clicks itself off.
then record # of miles travelled...let's say like 150 miles
@ 150 miles go to the SAME station and use the SAME pump and fill it up the SAME way again (meaning till the pump clicks itself off)
u know have the exact volume of fuel used to travel that 150 miles
voila
it's best to repeat this a number of times to get an average

Ive got a few exaust leaks, and driving pretty hard and I got 260 miles out of my last tank, but I noticed a leak when the pump was getting within a $1 of full, it was leaking pretty bad. Idk where it was but it wasnt doing it later. I also park on an incline so that wasnt helping. With my old max it used to get 350 no problem.

Me too.. I'll be running on fumes it seems and the car takes 10 yrs to crank over, but when I go to fill up it only takes 15 or so gallons.. it seems hard to believe that there should almost be 4 gallons left

A leaky flex section will also cause bad mileage....
