wanting to buy this max but what could this problem be?

ok I think I want to get this max. its a 1990 5sp se, with 210k on it. the girl that owns the car says
It made this really loud noise, like a helicopter was flying over the last time I started it. After that I parked it in my garage and have not touched it since.
I called her and that was still the only way she knew how to describe the sound. the only thing that I can come up with is that its the Y-pipe flex piping b/c my flex pipe is totally shot and its really loud. is there anything other than the y-pipe that could make a noise that loud?

If it really was blk helicopter...?

Dropped exhaust pipe could be loud noise.

I had a bad o-ring on my flex pipe (where the rear flange meets the y-pipe) and it was very, very loud. It did, however mellow out once I got moving.

Can't be sure what the problem might be until you actually listen in person.

UPDATE******

I talked with her last night and she said that this sound started to happen one day after she had to pop the clutch to start. she said that after she poped the clutch she drove it home and parked it. she said that she did start it one time after that I think and she had to pop the clutch to get it to start.

this makes it even more confusing for me, now Im sure its not the y pipe. she said that the timing belt was not changed since 70k and its at 210k so I thought it could be the tensioner pulley going out but she said that it sounded really loud so Im at a loss.

anymore ideas from you guys on what this could be?

All auto-related possibilities have been ? given... U next have to elevate on the women logic level to get ? better results. Anythin is possible there.

EveLogic box: trillion in-or-outputs, million potentiometers, no logicboard inside... AdamLogic: One input, logic, one output... at loss seeing trillion inputs.

What's sex got to do with this car's problem?

On the real side, we need to hear this noise to help!! Have the girl tape it or something and you can post it. This thread sucks without (pics) sounds!!!

Everything. U already identified that uself [180 degrees turnaround] = the "thread sucks without" 'cause of vague blk heli explanation, no facts to grip on, only feelings.

That is NOT maxima boi's fault, btw.

Man, its nice to see a bunch of ohio 3rd genners out there. But my max had something similar last year, i had blown out the flex pipe and when i was in a garage it sounded like a helecopter.

the major problem you would be looking at with that is problems with the input bearings, but that would not be very loud at all. If it is really loud, you're most likely looking at an exhaust issue.
