VE30DE Oil Filter alternative. Since the 15208-60U00 has been discontinued
Nissan decided that the VG filter (15208-55Y00) would be suitable for all V6 3-gens. But as you know the VE filter also shared it's application with all Nissans using the VTC type intake cam sprockets. So there is a reason why this special filter existed:
Bill details the story here: Nissan has discontinued the VE30DE - specific 15208-60U00 OEM oil filter.....
Us VE30DE users can use an OEM Toyota filter p/n 90915-YZZA2. The above thread has user results. I've also used this filter with good results.
Pricing is an issue. Some users have paid quite a bit. I've have found a source for much cheaper: I bought 5 of these for $3.29 + $4.95(shipping). Will comment again when I actually receive them next week.

I've been using the same Toyota filter for over a year with good results too. Just to add to what you said before about acquiring the Toyota filter. The person at the parts counter at the dealer said that part number is the same for most 4 cylinder car engines. You can go to the dealer and ask for a filter for a 98 Corolla instead of having to write down or remember a part number.
I have been using the 15208-60u00 religiously till this past oil change when my dealer said it was defunct and the 15208-55y00 is the replacement. Is Nissan copping out on the whole VTC issue? Will the 55y00 provide adequate protection? I already had the VTC sprocket assemblies replaced once and dont want to go thru that expense again. Should I stick with the 55y00 or go with the toyota as suggested
Bascily, you should be able to use whatever you want as the one actually designed for the VE is now discontinued.
If it were me, I'd go with the Toyota as that is what I use and is why I went to great lengths to write this FAQ sticky. I wouldn't have made this sticky if I didn't want to recommend it.

After several unsuccessful attempts to obtain the 60U00 oil filter ( including one unscruplous fellow that was willing to sell them to me at $35 a pop !), I decided to give the toyota a whirl. It is much smaller but fits just fine. Only prob is that I have become spoiled with age and since my nissan dealer refused to put a toyota filter on a nissan, I did the job myself. I forgot what a pain that damn plastic shield is that seems to be directly in the path of the oil pan drain, so as usual i made a damn mess! Anyways, it on there and many thanks for the info.
One last question, I was a tad perplexed at the multitude of oil choices out there, including reg 5w-30, high mileage 5w-30, combo synth/oil, and full synthetics. I went with the high mileage 5w-30 ( my car has 86K), although i wonder if next time i should consider a synth blend or full synth. Also , why do the high mileage oils >75 K not have the 'energy conserving' stipulation in their resume?...and does that mean anything?
High milage oils are probably thicker to better seal worn seals and parts, which is why they aren't energy conserving. Your milage is NOT high and if you don't have any leaks or burn too much oil, I would either just use a good conventional oil and change regularly, or a pure synthetic and change at longer intervals with a filter change in between.
You might want to ask in the Lubrication & Fluids forum, but that's it in a nutshell.

Thanks again, cleaner....in PA
I bought my Yota filter for $4.19 a pop and had a local oil place change it for $13.22 They didn't have a problem with using my own filter, albeit smaller than OEM, at all.
After the oild change, I decided to look on purolators website to see if there was an aftermarket equivalant to the Toyota 90915-yzza2 filter, It seems as though purolator has one with a part# of L14476. What do you guys think? http://www.pureoil.com/ProductFinder.aspx?action=IG and type in the Toyota Part # without the dash inbetween.

Why not order from the place I recommended?

If you want to use the Purolator, I'd just cross the Nissan p/n and not the Toyota one.

I think if you want to use OEM filters, I'm will to bet that stepping into your nearest GEO or CHEVY dealer will be cheaper than a Toyota dealer
Don't know what you mean. I recommeneded the Toy filter because it's a good quality filter. Not because it's an OEM filter. I don't know if the GEO or Chevy filters are crap or not. Even if they use the Toy engine, I don't know if they use the same Toy filter. Alot of assumptions there. Unless you actually buy one and cut it up to compare.
Nah, as nice as it is to save that money, I would prefer to buy retail and help local business owners. The price of the filters isn't too drastic from the internet site you linked above.

I did that also, but it comes up with the same Purolator part# as the VG engine. I though that was a no no for VE's?

Your right, it was an assumption which is why I said "will (meant willing) to bet". I was going by the Purolator guide. I used the Purolator's part # for the Toyota filter to check what other cars use the same filter, and they list GM vehicles also using the same Purolator part #. I'm not sure if that is the correct procedure?

Yes, I suppose it is, but instead I would try to crossreference the proper Maxima filter instead and see if any other OEMs use such a filter.
The reason why the Toyota filter was chosen is because the Nissan filter that replaced the 60U00 was the same as the VG one and considered inferior by design/construction, while the Toyota filter just happens to fit and has superior construction. It's perfectly okay (from a fitment/specification point of view) to use a filter for the VG engine on the VE, and in fact that's what most filter makers specify.
If you can find another OEM filter as well made as the Toyota one, but crossreferenced with the VG/VE filter I'm sure we'd all like to know, although I don't believe that many other non-Nissans do.
Absolutely wonderful information!!!!!!!! I've had my Max for just 6 months and have been so frustrated with the tick, this is just a great example of shared info. Thank you!!!
I can't make a new post as a "newbie" so I'll hijack this thread for a sec ( admin please excuse the intrusion ) Hey all, I'm Cy. A reformed Mazda (ford) Probe head, who moved on to an NX1600. After a VERY serious car accident I'm a proud owner of a 92 Maxima SE. I just wanted to say that this is the type of info and sharing I became used to owning a Probe. Like the Probe this model ( strickly speaking ) was only produced for a few years, and takes true lovers of the model to keep them going. I look forward to learning from all of you, and your experiences. Thanks again
Well I just put in the Toyota 90915-YZZA2 now called the "90915-YZZF2" (same filter) I used to get VTC Tick 50% of the time on over-night cold starts for about 1-2 min. With the Toyota Filter, it has eliminated it completely! Good little filter, real small compared to the Nissan one, but a perfect fit. I payed $6.45 @ the local Toyota dealer and it's worth every penny! I highly suggest this filter!

I've been using K&Ns and Mobiles, and in the beginning I was using FRAM's tough guard. I was wondering (because my VTCs are already shot and making noise) if putting the Toy filter on would make any difference at all?
Ok, thanks for the tip. I didn't know if trying to find the filter was worth my time. As said above, they don't have the yzza2 or whatever the original name was, or the new one that was mentioned available on that site.
i went to the yota dealship to day to get my filter and they said that they changed the part# from yzza2 to yzzf2, when i took it home it looked to be the same filter as the old one. just an FYI for everyone...let me know if this is wrong.

I picked up the Toyota 90915-YZZF2 filter and took it to my local Jiffy Lube and they said no problem using it on the oil change. But when the change was done they called me into the garage and my VTC were hammering (not knocking). Tech below could feel the oil rushing throught the little oil filter. I trust everybody hear but I had to take it for a road trip. Had tech replace the filter with a shop filter recommended in their books for the Maxima. Now no knock. I tend to think the previous owner had use the 10W oil as apposed to the 5W oil. Either case I don't care, cuz my Max is running quite at Idle. Any other thoughts about the thicker oil causing the rattle?
Guys! We are in trouble... I think. I just picked up a 90915-YZZF2 from the Toyota Dealer in Burnsiville, MN and it's NOT the USA made one. It's made in Thailand, and looks like a pile. Anyone else gotten any of these?
I will post pictures when I can... crappy digital camera not working right...
As I said, I would get pics up. Here they are, but I thought I would start another thread in case 56Kers come here and don't want to look at pictures. Still wondering if anyone has used these filters VS. the USA made ones, which is all I have used in the past.
Just another vote of confidence - I've been running the Toyota filter in my 92 SE for 3,000 miles now and while I haven't noticed a cutdown on ticking or anything, it's at least doing as good of a job as the old one.
The Toyota parts book I looked at with the service mgr. at the dealership implied that the new part replacement yzzf2, like all Toyota filters has a backflow valve... as kind we like to have on the VE30DE. He was unable to verify this by looking at it....
I'm sure most of you haven't heard of Union Sangyo Nippon filters. They're available from worldpac sources like www.thepartsbin.com and the like. They're a japanese company with operations in a few places. I belive their filters are made in malaysia. These are *excellent* quality oil filters. I still have one from my old 91 Maxima SE (wrecked) that I plan to use on either my '81 Datsun 210 or 86 Pulsar. Not only are these filters excellent quality, but they are also *sticklers* for making their filters just like the OEM peice, right down to the color and part number. Every valve and spring and the like will be in place just as it was in the factory filter.
I was surfing around for parts and remembered this thread and the different filters, so I thought I'd post.
This is their take on the good old 15208-60U00:
versus my 15208-55Y00
I have a friend with a 300ZX who uses the upper filter because it mimics the old Nissan piece so well. I've been using their version of the VG filter on all my Nissans for some time now. They were great on my now-dead Maxima. As we can see in the pics, both filters use a nice red silicone anti-drainback valve. The blue filter does not use a bypass valve, however...which is weaksauce.
Just a suggestion. Take it for what you will. If only their website was as good as their filters.
