I use dyno oil... i dont see the point in using synthetic, especially on an older motor that i thrash around everytime i drive it... not to mention it doesn't get driven much.

I'm not even sure if what i just said makes sense, im just really tired...

if you're not driving it much, and thrash it everytime you do.. wouldn't synthetic be MORE beneficial? rather than a car that gets driven on the highway, gently, and oil changed every 2-3 months? The longer oil sits, the more it breaks down.. i'm not sure if that impacts the filter itself as much as it does the oil and the parts the oil is supposed to lubricate.

The only benefit from using the bigger D3 filter would be a slightly(very slight) higher oil capacity, nothing else. The filter itself is not any "better" in quality then the other filters mentioned.

more filtration surface in a larger filter (assuming equal number of pleats per inch)

doesn't matter as much on a '90.. just use mobil1 or wix or purolator pureone. the DOHC (92-94SE) is the one that's super-picky about oil filters. Notice the topic title says "VE30DE" whereas your car has a VG30E.

Should I get the Toyota oil filter? And I bought Mobil-1 5000 today, 5 quarts for 10 bucks. How much does the VE motor take?

Okay, I finally pulled the trigger and bought the D3 filter from my local Toyota dealer today and changed the oil with the same 5w-30 Castrol GTX. It is at LEAST 80 percent better as far as the ticking goes. It is only there on occasion now at start-up and every once in a while at idle (but still much quieter). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this continues!

Nice job Thats my filter of choice as well. It worked better then the smaller F2 filter for me. Its always funny going to the Toyota dealer to get an oil filter for your Nissan, but Im use to it by now hehe.. Good luck.
