Engine "whirring" noise

My 1990 GXE has developed an engine noise that is driving me crazy!
Symptons:
Can be heard at lower RPM's when eng speed decreasing. If I take RPM's up to 1500 in nuetral/park and let off the gas I get the infamous "whirrrrrrrrrr" I removed ALL accesory drive belts but noise still is present.I listened with a stethoscope at various engine locations but noise seemed to be present at all of them. I thought possibly the timing belt tensioner but I just changed the T/belt and tensioner last night and still same "whirrr" when engine speed decreases back to idle . Car runs normal except for noise.
Anyone experience this?

John

I just posted about something similiar a few days ago

I have the same symptons going on in my car. It just started last week at close to 170000 miles. It is only at low RPM and not dependent on wether the car is in gear or not. It's driving me nuts to. I was wondering if it was the begining of a bearing going out, not sure though. I'd like to see if anyone else has had this and figured out what the heck it is. 92GXE Auto

I'm thinking maybe distributor bearing? If I hold my hand on top of distributor cap I can "feel" the vibration. Of'course I can feel the vibration at just about at any other location;-)
Anyone have a distributor bearing fail on a VG motor?

Is it a low moan sound? Does it get worse when the lights are on? I bet it's the alternator. Other choice would be the PS pump. I just checked mine yesterday. Jacked up the car, took the pass side splash shield and wheel off and used the hose to finally dial it down to the alternator. Have the lights on when you test also

If it's in sync with the rpm of the engine, you may want to look at your tranny. It's an auto, right? Sounds like trouble...

Yeah I suppose it could be a tranny bearing, listen in that area closly. TB tensioner won't make noise at that low of an RPM, really.

Have you installed an engine block oil by-pass kit?

How would I have a transmission bearing making a noise when the car is in park or nuetral when the engine rpm is increased?

Could be a turbo.

Did you get one installed by mistake?

whiirrrrrrrrrrr...

j/k, but since this was the ONLY thread on the .org without a turbo comment , I thought I'd liven it up.

Funny, I actually have one too. I get a whrr whrr whrr whrr type nose right around 1600rpm. You NEVER hear it when accelerating b/c the tach flies right past that one point, but if I lock out 4th, or even if i'm in 4th at that 1600 mark I get. If I go a tiny bit faster or slower its not there. Its been that way for atleast a couple years. I'm not even worried about it.

Because your shafts are spinning regardless. They are spinning with the engine rpm. There are all sorts of parts in your transmission that are moving, regardless of whether or not the car is stationary. I'm not really the guy to ask to get any deeper into it than I already have, automatic transmissions are pretty confusing to me, but I understand kind of how they work, and it sounds to me like that is probably your problem. Any time you have any sort of suspicion about your transmission, get it checked immediately. Better to pay a little diagnostic fee (if applicable- some places do it for free) than to destroy your transmission and cause even more trouble. Trust me! I've been through several on these cars .
