HELP! I'm in a serious bind and need asst immediately! My car won't start and need to get back home from my parents house which is a 2 hour drive. It is only 12 degrees but my car won't start. I have never had this trouble. When you turn the key it will crank but not start. If you try it again it won't start, after a couple of times it won't even turn. No clicking nothing!

I ran the codes and it comes up with an 0802 and 0407. After reading the stickies I want to clean the Crankshaft Position Sensor but have no clue how to or where it is located.

I have no time to mess with trying to read the stickies. I'm in a crunch. Can anyone guide me.

I drive an automatic 96 Maxima, lowest model, 6 cylinder. I'm a girl and need explicit, non-technical terms explanation of how to do this. I know more than your average girl about cars but know nothing about this. Will it take long.

Can anyone help quick?! Thanks in advance.

It is located on the front of the tranny where it mounts up to the engine. It is black. It is secured by a 10mm bolt. Remove it and clean the sensor off with a rag and try to start the car. The sensor may be dead though... in which case you will have to replace it.

0802 = crank position POS
0407 = crank position REF

I find it very hard to believe both crank sensors went bad at the same time.
You have another problem on your hands, possibly a relay or fuse.

Both sensors are reached from under car. I highly doubt cleaning these will fix this problem, but it's worth a shot I suppose. The sensors are magnetic and mine and other working/non-code throwing CPS's I have removed were full of metal shavings, and oil on the front one under the oil filter. Like njmaxseltd said, pretty sure it's something else. Also, you said after a couple tries, the car would not turn over at all....that sounds very unlike a CPS as on a bad-code throwing sensor I fixed, the car would turn over fine, just would not fire up.

If I told you that my car for the past 2 months has been hesitating on accelaration, hard starting on occasion, would that make a difference. I have put in HEAT into the gas tank, changed spark plugs, ks, all 3 O2's in the past year. The other thing I have been told to check is the coils. Not sure what else to do. I'm at 231K and almost ready to move on...

You'll have to take off the passenger side splash gaurd behind the passenger side tire and crank the wheels to the right to see the ref sensor behind the crank pully for the belts. It's small and there is a connector plugged into it.

Crank sensor-Here's a view from under the driver side front wheel, follow the arrows to find where the crank sensor is.

Thanks much for your help, guys. Long story short. I didn't get the car started and had to borrow my parents for the week. I was 2 hours from my house and needed to get moving. Monday I decided to look at cars and found one on Tuesday, 01 Maxima GLE fully loaded with the deluxe upgrade 79.5K miles. So, I'm buying it and selling this one.

The old Max, well come to find out it was the starter. Dad's having that replaced today. $50 when it's all said and done. Hopefully no more troubles. I'll find out this afternoon. I want to buy the new one tomorrow.

I love my old Max and it has served me well. It's the first time I have ever been stranded. That's something to be proud of at 231K. My Sentra was just as reliable. I know the next owner will have the same reliablity.

Hopefully the hesitation will disappear long enough for me to sell it. Although, I should just changed the CPS and be done with it. What's another $50+ at this stage of the game. Too bad cause I just gave it a full brake job with new calipers, rotors and pads, 02 sensors (all three), KS, front axles and struts, exhaust and tires. All since August. Ouch!

Anyone want to buy it?

Thanks for all of your help. You have taught me a lot 4th Generation Gang. Lots of knowledge here. I hope I am just as lucky in the 5th Generation! You amaze me. Me hats off to all of you.
