I use to run 45-50psi on my Yokohama AVS ES100.....max PSI on that tire was 51.....they have REAL soft sidewalls that is why I bumped it up to 45-50....if i ran 35psi on those Yokohamas then I would get sidewall flex and slip and slide everywhere.....

running near the MAX PSI isn't so bad if your sidewall is very soft....I mean i ran my yokos above 45psi for nearly 15k miles and the treadware was wonderful

My 17" also say 51 Max PSI. I have been reluctant to take them that high. I have them at 35. Will 45-50 make that much of a difference?

i read in... motor trend i think, that running lower air pressures in the rain can actually decrease your wet traction.

they showed pics of two tires, one inflated to recamended pressure and one under inflated. the under-inflated tire had dramatically less road contact...

The higher the air pressure the better the gas mileage; especially on the highway. If you're worried, back down the max psi by about 5 lbs. Properly inflated tires will give you the best wet traction. When the whole "contact patch" is firmly on the road the tire will displace the most water.

I just got a set of 18" (upgrade from 17") and I have noticed a drop in gas mileage. I used to get about 9L/100km and since I got the 18s it dropped to 11L/100km. Weight wise, the 17" tire/rim weighed 49 lbs and 18" tire/rim weighs 50 lbs, so no biggie there, but my 17s were at 38 psi and at first I had 18s at 32 psi. Recently, I increased the psi to 34-35 and have noted increase in mpg. Now, my consumption is at 9.5L/100km which is more acceptable for my taste :-) So to answer, in my case, the higher the psi the better your gas mileage will be... Play safely!

higher is better for this, but don't go too high. A sharp bumb or a ***** on the tire might cause an explosion. I run my ContiSportContacts at 46 PSI, but they're rated at 51 max. Also, make sure your tires are wearing evenly. If there's wear on the edges of the tire, you're running psi too low and the car is riding on the sidewall. If too high, the middle of the tire will wear out because there's a donut effect on the tire. And changing tires all the time will easily offset the savings you made on gas. Something to consider.

I'm running 36 psi all round on my 235/45/17s... I get around 22-24 mpg these days, but it all depends on how the person drives and the city/highway mix.
