FYI: Going to dyno : Midpipe vs stock res. 3.5L

Just going to do a little comparison between the cheap intakes tomorrow (Fri 2/4).

Probably do about 4 runs

Stock - Baseline
GAB (coat hangar) only
F/C midpipe only
F/C midpipe + GAB

Personally I like the GAB only.

With just the midpipe and no GAB, it doesn't seem like anything has been done, not even sound difference, very minmal if any added sound, and with intakes, you know, can hardly ever feel them.

With the GAB + midpipe, it's too loud, just as loud if not louder than a 3.0L JWT hybrid w/ USIM, too loud for my tastes.

if you have time, i know the difference will be neglible but maybe stock resonator with fc filter (popcharger). i have seen a few 4th dynos with the same inputs and will be interested to see the outcome for the 3.5.

4 runs on the dyno total? Keep in mind that your 1st one and maybe your second will be 3-5whp low. It would be nice to see 3 dynos for each but I know thats quite a bit of money to find out what some minor bolt ons are doing for you. Regardless I am waiting in anticipation.

I am doing 3 of each, taking the best and using them as comparisons, I've got it for an hour, but will probably have to extend my time further, I'm showing up early, as this shop is not very busy at all.

My main concern is the shape of the curve, I've looked at Frankecars dyno with the intake he sells, and the shape is not so falt and peaks 8-hp, but it also shows peak losses of that if not more, and also Zack did the same comparison on his 4g, and also came out with a not so good curve shape using a resonator. My guess is the GAB will be best, we'll see.

It's a Mustang lovers shop so we'll see how that goes, they do a lot of FWD's, but mostly Civics and tegs, so hopefully I can surprise them.

From my experience a cone type filter with the stock resonator is the best combination. If you have the capbilities and the time please give that a try as sloppymax also suggested.

Yeah, I've been to this dyno before and they are cool in terms of tehy usually give you an extra .5-1 more hr for free, the main reason I want to go is because I want to see what #'s my car is putting down with the headers, although I've never done a baseline, still a good bit of knowledge for me.

I'm guessing a baseline average of an auto is 190-200, so anything i beat over taht would be good for me, the more the merrier though.

I have bet with a fellow co-worker as he doen't think I can break 200whp, yes, another Mustang guy.

I have yet to show him some typical results of similar crs to mine, but he put down 243 with a 95 5.0 Cobra.

He's got pulleys, short headers, H pipe, CAI and a larger TB, I think he has tuning issues.

He's one of those +5+10+15 = 30hp, not a person that sees things under the curve.

Who else thinks this is pointless? A very large waste of money if you ask me. Although it will be helpful to the community. Still, that is a lot.

i think if he has the desire to know the outcome and has the money for the dyno then its not pointless. it is better than some hacks here asking for money to dyno their own mods.

An intake is an intake for all practical purposes. The money spent on all the dyno time could be put toward something that actually makes real power.

oh i agree, i am just saying that when you trying to hit a goal, you will do anything you can to hit and that may include an intake that hits 2 more peak hp.

Not pointless I wanted to see what my car had too, since I've enver dynoed before, and well, I ahd a few intake ideas to paly with so why not use the time instead of jsut waste it on one run.

I have to scan the pic of it, but for now I'll give numbers

All these are SAE corrected.

2003 automatic SE
47k
strock 17's
3rd gear run

67 degrees
10% rel. humidity
Can' think of the baro rpessure right now, will have more setails later.

210whp Baseline HP
224 wtq

214 whp W/ only MP

219 whp GAB only

220GAB + M/P
234 wtq

The other torque numbers had a large spike so I will have to get the run files and find the correct #, as the I didnt put b/c they were reading the spike, which was about 245-250 which wasn't correct, ojnce I show the graph, you will understand.

The stock resonator is more restrictive above 6k, the straight m/p showed better results in that RPM range, and the m/p +_ GAB was nearly identical compared to the GAB/stock mp, only in the 6k+ ranbge did the m/p show a little bit more gains.

GAB+M/P = 10whp/10wtq? Wow good stuff. I cant wait to see the actual curves. I am gonna have to look into getting a M/P. Thanks for the info man. How much money did you get off of the mustang guy?

The GAB alone was almost identical to the GAB/mp and the mp + gab is not worth the noise it's too loud IMO.

Also, you have to cut the m/p about 2-3 " so it fits with the stock air box.

I ended up paying just the $40 one run b/c it didnt take very long to do the switching. BTW, Its the coat hangar GAB. He was very surprised at the #'s, There was an altima that had laid 208 but he stated it had "a lot" of stuff, still not sure what " a lot" means. All in all I'm proud of my automatic, with only a GAB and headers I got 219, not bad IMO, wish i would have had a baseline to see what the headers yielded.

I figure it might be worth it becuase I have the TS ECU. The extra power above 6k rpm would help out there. How big the difference is I wont know until the curves are posted. How much louder can it be? Anybody got a noise comparison clip? Is it only louder at WOT or is it loud even at idle and regular driving?

Not loud normal driving or idle, but It gets loud at WOT. Just raspy, and I don't like that, some people probably do but not my taste.

The curves cut off at 6.2k as he only took one to fuel cut. He said it was reading 6.8k but the machines say 6.5, so aontoerh indication of our tachs being off a bit. But ecen at 6.2k you can extrapolate for the last 300 rpm whcih way the curves were going to go. I called them and the guy is tuning a car so I probably wont get them posted until tomorrow.

How old is this thread? I have gone through several intake setups and ended up with a GAB/Midpipe combo because it felt the best. Kinda weird because It was just my seat of the pants testing that resulted in the combo.

Glude, less than a week old. Quicksilver, where? We have one stock. . .

I still have to call them for my run files though. Still not worth the extra noise when you can get jsut about the same performance for the cost of one coat hangar.

NmexMAX - Are you stock 2k3 automatic? If so then aren't those #s real high? I mean baselin whp at 210 for an automatic? jeez even 6spds don't see 210whp.....well just wondering what other mods you have.....

oh yeah sweet thread on dynoing your car with stock vs MP vs GAB.....I use to run the GAB with stock resonator and it gave a nice growl to it....but sounds almost stock during daily driving...it's perfect for the enthusiast seeking a lil louder sound over stock...plus it's a free mod so u can't go wrong.....now I have upgraded to the BERK MP/APEX-i filter....all I have to say is this thing SCREAMS after 3900RPMs (when VI kicks in)......if any 2k2-2k3 owners want a loud switch over that sounds similiar to an S2000 or Integra Type R....then get a full intake...trust me u won't regret it!

GAB and non GAB with Midpipe.

No Midpipe GAB no GAB

Both closed with and with out M/P (red w/o blue with M/P)

Both open with and without midpipe (red with, blue w/o)

GAB is good.

This is similar to Zack's dyno with and without a mid pipe. There is a pretty good dip around 5k rpm with the pipe. If it could be tuned to smooth out the dip that would be nice. Good results either way. I cant belive I missed this.
Not sure if you saw his thread http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....dyno+resonator. Same deal.
