What happens when the Torque converter goes bad?

What happens when the Torque converter goes bad? My tranny slips going into gear right at first, like in D and R. But it shifts after that fine, im trying to think of the reason.. any help is appreciated..

To be more specific, I have to rev it to like 1.5 - 2k to get it to start moving, it feels like I have a manual..

sound like one of the clutch packs in your trans is failing....?have you checked the fluid level??? low trans fluid can cause the trans to slip when starting out

Well when a tc goes bad several diferent things can be broken inside the unit. Do you still have the ability to hit high speed? Is the acceleration similar to the way it was before you started noticing the lag in motion?
if both the answers is yes then "most likely" your tc is not bad.
let me look @ the fsm and study out auto transaxle and Ill let you know about the posibilities.

transmissions work because of this: PFM
i wouldn't want to mess with PFM myself.(even though i just did the otherday it was stupid)
if you read your manuel it tells you what to do and the steps:
1. check fluid level
2. bring to nissan dealer for evaluation
3. get ready to bend over

goto a tranny shop.
a mechanic will be cheaper for the estimate most likely but will have less input for the real cause and or fix(or so i say)

actually, i wouldn't recomend flushing it tyler...

Start by getting some Lucas Oil Tranny Stop fluid, and add it to your tranny fluid. If that doesn't help, then i would go to B&M transmission in lexington. Ask for a guy named bobby. I myself haven't been, but i was told by Craig at high point nissan that he would recomend me going there instead of the dealership, simply cause he does a little better work than they do, and they do it cheaper...never thought i would ever hear the dealership say that, but we've been with Craig since he started there, and he really is a good guy.

I decided to stop doing the drop resistor mod, and when i did, my tranny was basically screwed. it was slipping kinda bad, so i got my tranny flushed and new fluid put in. when i did that it only got worse. when i added the Lucas Oil, it actually helped out alot.

Now i've basically resorted back to the drop resistor mod just so i can drive my car...I highly recomend not doing this unless it's wired using some type of WOT switch.
Oh well, i smell a manual tranny coming my way...but now how to tell my dad the tranny is dead...
