I dunno about japanese cars, but when the first engine in my truck blew, it was just like the engine was gone..exhaust noise, heavy smoke, and zero power...I was driving down a gravel road and went to turn kinda uphill onto a bridge and tried to accelerate and there was nothing there (smoked the bearings and cracked the block)..the very very used engine that was driven too hard by too many people I put in it after that wasn't that gentle..accelerated from a stop sign and BOOM, rod through the head..snapped 1 of the bolts that held the carb in place, bent the air cleaner hold down bolt, and put a hole through the bottom of the air cleaner when the rod came up and hit the air cleaner..(REALLY glad it stopped there and didn't go through the hood)
If your engine really blows, you WILL know it..in most cases, they wont start at all, or if they do they wont shake, they'll make loud knocking sounds and very soon after a rod will come through the block somwhere..least thats been my experience..

Hey Subs, was your Camry an older one with the 2.0L? Prolly the same engine in my Celica.
It sounds like pest is having issues with spark/cylinders. Maybe your timing belt jumped? Is there a lot of oil in there or is it really loose? Could also be your distributor. There are a number of things that caused this. A long time ago, I had a 72 Datsun 510. When I first got it (I was 15) and I went through a puddle. For the rest of the day, it was shaking and running soooo bad. Of course, it had water in the distributor, but I had no idea at the time...

psst. WD40 and PB blaster both displace water. If you pressure wash the car and its not starting, normally you can spray the distributor cap with WD-40 and it will get rid of all the moisture.
trick I learned at school with the steam cleaner.

yeah if it overheated and you didnt notice you may have blown the head gasket. check your dipstick to see if you see antifreeze, Those symptoms dont really sound like over heating, I would go to the mechanic and have them pull the code.

PB is not really a water displacement thing. it a penetrant lube/chemical.

PB said it could displace water on the side of the container, I think. I still use WD-40 for it because of habbit and its cheaper (and we have about 4 cans just laying around) lol.
I'm still thinking about spraying some PB Blaster in a styrofoam cup and seeing how long it takes to melt it. (sometimes I'm easily ammused )

I've never heard of an engine shaking from over heating, smoking is another story.

I was running straight water when I first got my car (had just replaced the tranny and wanted to run it, blah blah blah). I decided to seafoam it, and also just play around (kind of ran it high, after a while I noticed my coolant overflow tank was boiling, my temp needle was 3/4ths of the way to the top.
I wasnt sure if I should have just let it idle to cool down, but I decided I would just shut it off. I forget what the correct way is (i think its idling). Anyway, engines running fine, just a small scare
