Anyone delete the vacuum valve on the air box? Its the one that injects fresh air into the exhaust.
I kept mine, all I did was remount it on the mount for the air box and put a small filter on it, had to bend the pipe going to it a bit after you take the last bolt out that holds it to the head. Other then that you need a intake with 4 bungs for the idle control and crank case vent...

Thanks so much for that photo!

I've decided to ditch all the emissions crap. The only thing connected to the Intake will be the ISCV and the other valve across from it. (name escapes me)

Today I was able to get the trans down with the help of one of my buddies. Tomorrow, get the flywheel resurface and a new boot put on one of the axles. Sunday should be around the late 50s or early 60s out. Planning to get the trans back in there.

Finished the car up last night in the rain. Drove it to work this morning. Seems to work fine. The only two gripes are, when I downshift into second it grinds. And with the rigged short ram, I get a weird idle on a cold start. Once its warm, its steady.

best thing to do is double clutch when down shifting on these trannys, and yea mine seems to not like the cold with the short ram on it, but have to love the way it sounds when you step on it.

I have to admit guys, since I pulled out the new clutch master and adjusted the pushrod, the Max shifts better than she ever has! I was a bit worried there when I swapped out cylinders and shifting deteriorated over a few weeks, so maybe the jam nut on the pushrod did back off a bit and allow the travel to shorten (didn't look like it), but all is happy in 5-speed world!!

Sarin, since you chimed in here with your cold air intake, a couple questions. First, obviously, I see no air filter on the end...what are you using, one of K & Ns? Second, what kind of performance increases do you see with it? Have to admit, getting the air filter box out of there sure opens up that area of the engine bay...

I tried the double clutch technique, didnt make a difference. Might have to live with the grind.

And ditto on the sound. Ive been driving like a retard because of the sound. Car does take off a lot quicker. Car spinds first no problems. But I also have some bald Azenis up front. But even before, they never spun on launch. lol Next up is exhaust.

Im gonna put the Z31 Ecu I have in and see if it makes a difference with the cold idle.

Merry Christmas my fellow Second genners!

Yea, you can ditch all emissions and just plug off lines. I started getting a rough idle when I deleted the fuel temp sensors. I figure it kept the fuel lean when cold and now its dumping in full amount. Runs great when warm. Does anyone have a parts list for the short ram set up? That's where I want to focus my deleting powers next, airbox!

Hello everyone!

Hey you guys...I just wanted to introduce myself and my car to the active group of older Maximas. I'm a 45 yr. old IT storage engineer, and I do pretty much all the maintenance/repairs on our 3 cars or find the correct thing to be done and work with a shade tree mechanic to complete most any tasks. I've got an affordable transmission expert also with 25 years SAE experience to do tranny work.

I've got my mother's 88' GXE with about 80K miles on it, lightly driven mostly like 8 miles a day for about 7 years, hardly any HWY miles, and then it sat nearly unused for about 4 years. I got the car in 2010, and did quite a few things to get it mechanically sound, including tranny rebuilt, and front end rebuilt, most of which I did or oversaw someone who knew a bit more tricks than me.

Hope you guys can share your expertise with me and get my car purring just right! I've got a question or two posted in the 1st n 2nd generation forum regarding fuel/air/ timing ecu etc. If you could give it a peek and let me know what you think it's much appreciated!

I'm still here. Still running. About to put in some work.

Just for a heads up, things I will be posting throughout the "build":

- Current tune-up issues
- Misc. DIY's
- Suspension work (coils or bags)
- Random modifications

IG is @dirtywerke for random updates. Thanks!

So thats what a wagon looks like with a SE lip. I was thinking about that look for years. lol

I cant for the life of me figure out why my car struggles to idle sometimes ever since I did the short ram intake. Sometimes itll idle steady. Most of the time, like in traffic and stuff it'll drop to 500RPM and misfire. I did a full tune up last week and it didnt get any better. Checked for vacuum leaks and nothing. Idk if it has to do with the cold weather we've had.

Right now currently, the egr vacuum hose is left off. Im thinking if its stuck half way open or something. I have the block off plates I'll be installing this weekend.\

Taking thoughts and concerns.

My wagon just hit 243,000 miles earlier last week. Changed a few of the fuel hoses last weekend too.
I also have the intermittent stumble to 500RPM too, but I still have to check the rest of the other systems.
Hope to see more check-ins!

Well I'm doing my best! Think I have a coil on the fritz, but should check the dizzy and rotor. When she warms up, get a miss under moderate acceleration, but fine when I get on the gas lightly. Jeez, if all I have to beetch about is a fricken $35 coil, I guess life is alright!!

depends on where the vacuum lines are and how close the maf is to the throttlebody needs to be about 12 inches...

Saw a nice 2nd Gen Maxima yesterday looked like an 88 SE and seemed to be running really nice! I would love to had a 1st and 2nd Gen Max as well! There's a lot I can make for those cars. I will be getting a VG30E from a friend, for another friend to stuff in his 2nd Gen Maxima that's been laid up forever!

Double DIN stereo install attempt today. Hopefully I can try to move the OG EQ into the cubby. Rear shocks ordered for measurement. I've read all the suspension discussions and still haven't found an answer to a shorter cross-reference. Sanding wheels & prepping for paint this whole weekend. Still deciding on color options. Don't know if I want to go full SE look or just play around and do a BOSO-VIP mash up. 4-ply silicone couplers on the way for intake plenum change.
Hope all is well out there!

UPDATE: Stereo in & functional!

Used factory brackets to bolt everything into the dash. Lost the OG EQ though

I must admit, I've never been nuts over the audio and radio stuff even though I have installed 2 nice systems in the past which were my own. I'm more into the mechanical side of the car and if it had no radio the exhaust note or induction roar was my music....my passengers hated it though!!!!!

@CMax03 Trust me, the car is mechanically sound. Stereo works beautifully.
Update: got the KYBs coming on Monday and mocking up the Arnott system. Plenum had some fitment issues, but just takes some simple work. Relaxed at the beach this weekend to forget about car people problems. Hope you all did something similar to alleviate the stress

Update:

Just my weekly check in here. Went over to the N side of Orlando yesterday, a nice 160 mile round trip with a lot of stop-n-go in O-Town. The Max ran perfectly, even went by her ancestral home, Reed Nissan on W Colonial...

So I have some new updates on my car. Been busy with work, started a new job with NYC Transit. =D So now I commute about roughly 70 miles a day. Last weekend the car got a new front right hub and bearing. Today I just deleted the EGR and installed the 300zx ECU I had for the past few months. I figured deleting the EGR would clear the idle and make the exhaust less toxic after deleting the emissions vacuum crap months ago. Well, it didnt. The ECU did. Car idles much more steady, just need to turn it up a little bit.

Next on the to do list is the front engine mount, and all the damn suspension clunking I have going on thats driving me freaking nuts.

Swapping to a 300zx ECU does what for the Maxima? What I f I flash the Maxima with a JWT program.....Wouldn't that be better?

Hey Cmax, I'm curious what kind of stuff you can make for 2nd gen Maxima's. I'm looking for the next steps in performance increases from stock. I think I just brought my 88' Max from about 70% of it's performance to closer to 100% of new power and response by troubleshooting with you guys here, and ultimately advancing my timing some.

Which engine do I have?

88' Nissan GXE, red top, 3000 V6 3000 printed on it. Is this the VG630 or E or T that I keep seeing some of the more experienced guys discussing? How do I confirm which?

it's a VG30E the only thing that would change that across the board is VG30I is found in pathfinders/hardbodys that have throttle body injection, the VG30T is going to be a single turbo found in the 300z turbos, as far as the red top if you talking about valve covers I think there are only the red and tan, red is found in the cars and tan in pathfinders/hard bodys which have the oil fill on the odd bank.

I've built a VG30E for my 3rd Gen and I'm kinda thiking doing the sane recipe for my buddy's 2nd Gen:
1. Ported Heads
2. Performance Cam (Zcar.com)
3. Large Oil filled Ignition Coil
4. 3rd gen exhaust mani and ypipe
5. 2.5" catback and Hi flo cat
6. Adj. FPR
7. L/w crank pulley
8. Aftermarket Ignition System (Accel, Mallory, MSD, Summit, Petronix, etc)
9. JWT popcharger and Custom heat shield
10. Oversized valves
11. JWT High RPM Valvesprings
12. Deactivate EGR and Intake manifold heater circuit
13. Adjustable Cam sprockets
14. Fill Engine Mounts with Poly
15. ARP rod bolts
16. ARP Head Stud or Head Bolts

Well not exactly weekly, but whatever. The old girl got some miles under her belt this past week. 1 trip to Orlando, 1 trip to St. Pete, 1 trip to Tampa, all told put about 600 miles on her this past week, she's happy as a pig in poop...
