'81 Strut Assembly

'81 Strut Assembly

I have searched the web and exhausted all my resources to find a strut assembly for my 810 Max. This is the steel sleeve that houses the strut and is not a standard replaceable part like the strut itself. The top of it mushrooms out. Mine is badly rusted in the mushroom area and is a bit of a hazard.

I am hoping to find new ones, but will accept excellent used ones. Please let me know if you know of a supplier of this part. It appears they are no longer being made.

I assume they are all the same from '81 to '84? If you know, please verify.

81' through 84' should be all the same. also, 280zx struts of the same years should fit on our 1st gens... the 81' through 84' is mostly based on the s30 chassis, same as the 280zx. all the parts you'll need are fairly easy to come by online, just google it, ebay has some stuff for z cars from time to time I'd also recommend a little research on the hybridz forum or other z car forum, very informational and helpful, maybe some member's classifieds would catch your eye... I just bought a set of front & back struts, rear sway bar, wheel bearings, full urethane bushing set, tierods, endlinks and front lowering springs for 280zx. most of the parts were pretty reasonable, I got all this so far for a little over $400. I just haven't got around to installing any of this, I'm still needing front control arms and ball joints, once I get those, I wanna install it all in one shot.

I'd recommend this site for a few part #s and a little advice from a guy that seems to have built a few modded 1st gens! I'm not sure, but I think this guy was/is on the org as well :

Which ones do you need? Front, back, drivers side or passenger side?
There is a 1984 Maxima wagon in the local Pull a part and I think it has the
front struts on it the last time I saw it. If it's the rear, I have a 1984 sedan
parts car with the rear end intact. I can use everything from the front doors
forward with my wagon.

I need the front strut assembly, both sides, but I don't know that I would want them from an Ohio parts car. They will surely be just as rusty as the ones currently on my car.

Wasn't the suspension a bit different on the wagons? Front AND rear?

The parts car that I have is from Tennessee and the only rust on it is
on top of the roof near the rear passenger side door.

As far as I can see from the 84 wagon and sedan that I have, everything from
the front doors forward is the same (The power steering pump could be either an Atsugi or GM Saginaw). The factory service manual doesn't show any difference in the front suspension, but it does show a different rear suspension
for the wagon than the sedan.

You can try www.car-part.com to find quite a few strut assemblys.
Some may be closer to you or from a rust free climate.
