the sad part is people keep junking them because theyre too lazy or ignorant to change their timing belts and when they break them they just call the junker...

but i have GREAT news!!!!!!! me and my friends pulled a 1987 MAXIMA SE out of the junkyard the other day! we put fuel injectors in it,put new wheels and tires on {because it had none},new MAF,and are currently restoring it! and just think only 300 dollars saved this car from CERTAIN destruction! the junkyard was only 2 days away from crushing it...were gonna change the timing belt next!...

I would love to find a cheap 2nd gen. An ex gf of mine had an 87 with leather sunroof and digital dash years ago. I would love to find one similar that is cheap and needs work..

To erase the codes you disconnect your battery.

So you were able to start your car by removing that air duct hose assembly? Was it running normal when you did that? Read somewhere that car would start also by removing the air flow meter’s connection. So does that mean it’s bad?

When my car had it’s problem there was no error codes. I got tired of troubleshooting and finally just changed the AFM with a spare that I got off of eBay. That was the fix.

There is a chemical spray at the auto parts store for cleaning afm/map sensors that you could try. There is a thin wire configured in a triangle shape that can be cleaned. It may or may not help.

You got so many codes and anyone of those could be the problem.

Al
Al, finally got around to working on my Maxima. Cleared out all the errors by disconnecting the battery. Ran the Self-Diagnosis again and it came back with 12, 23 & 41. I tested the Throttle valve Switch for continuity and it failed, so I know that I need to replace my throttle valve switch. Moved on to the Air flow meter. It failed its test, so I replaced it with a used one I purchased on ebay from a working Maxima. Before I put it all back together turned over the car and it started right up as smooth as new. Drove it for about 30 minutes with the air conditioner and not a single problem. As far as error 41 is concerned; I will be testing that sensor tomorrow to see what I come up with. If it fails I will add that to my junk yard (I found a yard that has a 1987 that has great parts) shopping list. Thanks for all the advice and recommendations. This place is a real treasure chest of information.

I just bought a 1987 maxima. I am extremely happy with it. It's ugly but it's starting to grow on me.

I got it from a little old lady. Car has 67,000 kms or 40,000 miles. She was the single owner of the car and all receipts from day one including the original bill of sale. Every oil change and always brought to the dealer. Rust proofed every year.

Now I need suspension and rims and she's good!

Fk i'm going back to picknpull tomorrow with a buddy (dude loves looking at RX7, 300zx, etc). Its gonna be a b!sh to pass that poor 2nd gen again

they took 2 rows of domestic cars to the crusher, i think the 2nd gen has not much time left before they crush 2 rows of imports Just a window and i'm sure she would even run if i tried to crank er

I think it only had 250,000km on it, my 3rd gen is bumping 411,000

Man i want that 2nd gen, those digital gauges are sick. Sad thing is theres a few cars at the junkyard that have VG30E engines (the '85 300zx there does) so i could get it up and running

think i'll go sit in it and drool some more tomorrow

This is gonna kill you. The first 2nd gen i found had a bit of the console taken and the digital gauges, thats it. Some workers decided to take the engine, probably for themselves, then they crushed it.

Went today, another ones there Light blue with normal gauges, absolutely mint. only 250km on it too, so thats about 110k miles i think

Indeed so sad.

I've been to the junkyard these couple of days... And there's always a garanteed Maxima there. Some don't even look that half bad... I guess the owners just, you know let it go.

yeah, some people can give up a car just like that. I'm one of the people who cant, if i get a car i feel like i have to do everything i can to keep it running until it wrecks or absolutely everything fails

86 5-speed needs a good home

I've still got my 86 SE. It now has about 225k miles but was running fine until the power steering system sprung a leak. It has been in the drive way for a couple of years now. The leak seems to be at at a fitting at the bottom of the firewall, too hard for me to get to. It starts right up on the second tap of the ignition. In the mean time the radio is gone died. Motor mounts are broken. Body is fine. I'd put up a picture but don't know how here. Would any one like to give this car a nice home? I'm 10 miles south of San Francisco. The weather here is easy on the body.

well what happened.....

i was at work and was hella hungry so for lunch i went to the tacobell for lunch. saw the cops on the other part of the partition and they was staring hard, i mean hard!. so i lookes then thought they couldnt be looking at me and did a doubble take and they was still staring. so i got my food watching them in my perephial. they both got into their cars. one pulled out of the parking lot like i didnt see him and waited for me at the side of the road. light turned green fot me and i rolled right past him. then he pulls out i make a right on a green light signal hand was red and no one was trying to cross. so im driving like 5 minunites and hes still tailing me. guessing he aint found nothing on me so looking for a reason. so the lights come on im like there you go you finally found sometin this is what i was waiting for. so i pull to the side he comes up and looks at the car and says:

you have a lot done to this

i laugh and say: kinda yeah why wassup

then hes all: license and reg

im like: sure

hands it to him and he goes back to his car and still finds nothing all my ish is current

so hes all: pop your hood for me

i say: yeah (**** i know he aint got a clue of what i got these moron cops)

so i pop it and its silent for a min or 2 as they inspect it.

he looks and says wheres the intake, i chuckle and point to the 2 turbos LOL!

then hes all: do you have any wastegates

i say: yeah theres 2 right there

looks more and hes all: wheres the FPR i point to it

hes like: so that is what that is....

looks more....

goes to the car gets his camera takes pictures, im like **** my setup is burned, this being a partially racist neighborhood a old white homeless guy comes up and aparently they know this guy he has warrants out for his arrest they know it and they tell him to get lost before they change their mind. im like WTF i better not get a ticket. so im still sitting on the curb 45 minunites later

then they take me to the car and is all like:

the reason why i pulled you over is for the failure to yield to the pedestrians at the right hand turn back there, and for a modified smog device. then hes all: since youve been notified you cant drive this vehicle until its repaired. repaired it 3 days later and back on the street with a letter from the ref saying that my setup is legal. i want his a$$ to pull me over thinking my **** aint fixed i will own his a$$
