question

Ok so My 88 Maxima wagon is giving me this weird issue. I have to heat it up before I drive it because if I don't it doesn't want to shift. It is an automatic if it helps. I was thinking maybe it has a tranny filter that is all clogged up or something. I noticed the tranny fluid in it was a little low and it was very watery looking not thick at all. It was hard to see how much thee was in there with the dipstick. Would it be a bad idea to replace that filter (if there is one) and also replace the tranny fluid entirely? I heard its bad is that true? I want to learn as much as I can about this ca. It was a gift and I absolutely love it and want to fix it. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Well, starting your own thread is the first suggestion.

Second suggestion is to get your trans fluid drained and refilled, and replace the filter (if it's meant to be replaced, some aren't). NO power flush or anything, just a simple drain and refill.

I wish I could start it but after this I still have 11 more posts before I can lol. I think I am going to try that. How do I know if the filter is meant to be replaced?

Sounds like slippage to me.. you either have too little or too much AT fluid in the system.

I'm doing a flush from Valvoline Dex/Mercron III, to full synthetic Mobile 1 fluid in a day or two. Seems to have good reviews and chemically exactly the same as Amsoil at a lot less $$$.

The filter removal is bit tricky, and can be cleaned without removal with brake cleaner.

I've always done any transmission flush on any car just like this....
always check the fluid car on warm, level ground, shift through the gears and then check the stick 3 times wipe each, read the cold side. Then after a 5 minute drive for comparison, rinse and repeat but read the hot side.

Read this post for an overview...

http://forums.maxima.org/fluids-lubr...eck-level.html

Two cautions, Be sure to check the levels for reference or you'll put 10 qts in when you may only need less to fill, and could end up overfilling again. Second be sure to dis-connect the return line at the cooler and run a plastic hose from there, vs the tranny or you'll make a mess when you crank the car and it's spews fluid everywhere! Good Luck!

No problem pretty simple and took about an hour including setup and cleanup.
