innards, in sequence

first off youll have to put the tranny on one side(peferably the side twhere the bellhousing is facing up in a bowl position, remove the outside surounding bolts and the bolts in the bellhousing, then pull it apart straight up if. there is a shaft in a solid cyndricial shape part, pull it out, carefully not to pull the cyndricial shape with it(wiggle it as you pull to get it out).

in the bottom left of the pic there is another cylindrical shaped thingy, you have to remode it by a clip on the base of it with a flat head screwdriver, then pull it out, then there is another clip in side the hole where it came from, some needel nose pliers will do the job, insert squeeze and pull out. then it will release the belt holding the large clutch packs, or large cylindrical thingy with the shaft in it that i removed already.

removed in order, pay attention!!!

the 2 parts removed (clutches)

removing more, pay attention!!

gear installed in the clutch when put back together. if it isint below leven when installed the clutches are not aligned!!

there is a bearing there in the center it has perpendicular lines from the rest of the lines in the tranny clutches, thi is a picture of the MAIN clutch i would believe, its affixed to the tranny housing with a clip that can be removed with a screw driver. i will be taking this one apart next. pay attention!!!

at about 8:30 you can see where the clip stops there is a lil lip where you can remove it with a screwdriver.

there ia another thin clip holding the parts together on this part you can remove it with a flat head screwdriver as well.

i removed the outer ring it is a one way deal its gonna make life a byiotch installing it with all the clutches back in, so get a soft face hammer and lightly tap it in when it is time.

yours wont be welded but mine is because of damage.

another bearing in the center of that one pay attention!!
that peice fit on top of this one, there is a small gear in the middle.

now i am going to take apart the clutches so you can see how their organized pay attention!!!

removing the clip with a screw driver. how most of them can be removed except for one, that one is a cross over type and can be pulled inward of the round area and pulled up.

well, ive just finished rebuilding my first auto tranny, that was fun! it was go good to get it all back to gether and drive it down the road again! for about 5 miles! as soon as the tranny warms up, i loose all power. none of the gears work at all, no reverse. i let it cool down over night and the next morning its fine again. what the hell is that all about? i didnt replace the torque converter, and i didnt install the shift kit it came with because it seems some like it and some dont. before i rebuilt it was stuck in 1st gear all the time, and reverse worked. now it seems to have a diffrent problem. any thoughts?

ill check my fsm and see what it says, did you put in like 7quarts of oil in it..., and your disks might be the wrong there rer some large c clips that go in there, and some one ay rings which act like spacers, concave one way and convex on the other.

as for the shift kit, in the city driving it drives like a 5 spd in second until you stop all the way.

pretty cool tho if you ask me i liked it.

yeah, i've pulled the tranny out again last night. ive double checked the cluch packs, the one way rings are all ok. not sure what c- clips your refering to, but ive gone through most of it all and its all in spec. i did talk to a tranny guy around the corner and he was thinking the governer or the control valve. i found lots of clutch debris in the govener and remembered i didnt tear it down during the rebuild. cleaned that up. as for the valve body, i didnt do anything to it when i was rebuilding but blow it out with air. it could be that. im taking it to him today for him to go through it, its way to complicated for me to tackle. will keep you informed. if all this is ok, i recon it can only be the torque converter.

Right. I finally got the valve body back from the transmission shop. Boy was he pissed! All but one of the valves were stuck beyond belief! It took him 4 hrs just to get it all torn down. He was really cool though and only charged me $60 for the work. I was stopping in there every day talking to him, and he was really impressed with what i had done so far. It sounds like he might use me to turn a wrench for him sometimes because he is way to busy right now!

Anyway. I installed the valve body and put all the rest back together. Then took the plunge! I've managed to drive about 40 miles and all is well so far. Tomorrow im going to go ahead and drive it to work and see what happens. I think ive got it all sorted out though.

So, the lesson is: get the valve body checked out before you put it all back together!

Thanks for your help guys. Another 1st gen maxima back on the road!
