280ZX Turbo T-5 trans.

I would like to put a 280ZX Turbo trans in my 82 Max. Can any one give me some feed back on putting in a one pice or two pice drive shaft in the car.

Do you have a factory 5spd, or is it a conversion? Are you doing an auto-manual conversion?

Why would you want to use the T-5? The only way you would need it would be if you had somewhere around 400-500 BHP. The T-5 is over rated! It is notchy and not the greatest transmission. Many like the Nissan units over the T-5. The T-5 from the Mustang is the same unit as the Nissan one except for the bell housing and input shaft, so you can use the one from the Ford.

The FS5W71B (late version) can hold as much power as you could make without really built motor. I have never heard of people running 300-400 BHP have a problem with the late version FS5W71B (the unit with reverse gear lockout). As long as you don't abuse a Nissan unit and use Redline or Mobil 1 oil you should be fine.

The 280ZX 2+2 has a one-piece unit, so maybe you could see if the unit from a ZXT 2+2 with the T-5 is long enough. Good luck on finding one, however. At that point, I would see about having one made.

5 speed trans.

I have a 82 diesel Maxima with a L2.8 motor. The motor is mated to the autotrans that came with the diesel motor. I have every thing to put the 5 speed in. My question was to keep a two piece drive shaft or have a one piece drive shaft made.

Do you realize the T5 does not have the same output flange as the Nissan units?

No matter what you will have to use the front part of a 280ZX turbo driveshaft. Might as well just get whatever length T5 driveshaft you can and have it custom mated to your existing driveshaft.

I didn't even know the 1st gen had a 2-piece...

I love the T5. It is solid and responsive. Much better and more precise than the sloppy Nissan units. I drove the 'late' 5-speed for years and its a good transmission but I prefer the T5.

Two piece or not two piece?

Yes I do know that I would need the 280ZX turbo T-5 drive shaft. I would need both input and the output because I will be all so useing an R200 from a turbo. I was just wondering if I should use a two piece drive shaft like the factory one or go to a one piece drive shaft. But it looks like I'm going where no man has gone before.

The Diesel, huh? I am looking for one myself.

The 300ZX Z32 used a two-piece unit, but Z1 Motorsports makes a one-piece unit to replace it (just for your FYI).

I don't know if anyone has put the T-5 into a 910, but maybe, you never know.
I guess I could see one advantage of the T-5 with the LD28 engine; more use of the low-end power that the diesel provides due to the lower gearing of the ZXT T-5.

As of now, I am working on an L28ET conversion for my hardtop 5-speed. I have to decide if I want to use the 910 5-speed or the late 81+ Z-car unit.

Still, just look at the people who drive these cars most of the time; a-to-b transport (boring). I wonder how many modified 910's are even around? I bet less than 30.

T-5 to a 280Z motor.

The trans is to be mated to my already installed 280Z motor with flat top pistons,42cc E88 head and 240Z carbs on a 260Z intake.

I dont' know why you mentioned your maxima having a diesel motor when it doesn't even have that engine installed anymore...
anyway, I would go with a 1 piece driveshaft. If its good enough for a 280ZX 2+2, then it should be fine for a Maxima.
The front flange on the ZX Turbo R200 is removable. So... you can create your driveshaft with either a Nissan rear flange or the "T5 style" rear flange. Your option. You can drop in the 3.54 R200 from the turbo and swap out the flange for whatever you made the driveshaft to work with. The turbo diff is nothing special. It is not an LSD unit just because it was in a turbo 280ZX... they didnt' come with LSD from the factory untill 1987.

Diesel Maxima.

I mentioned diesel because it was and still is to the DMV.No SMOG!
I didn't think of the 2+2. As for the R200 I was just going to get every thing at once out of one car.

Smog .

I is 1975 and newer that need SMOG. The diesels are exempt. But the diesel owner can be made to take a snap throttle test if it smokes a lot. My car won't smoke unless I start burning oil.
