84 temp sensor wire

The cyl. head sensor has only one terminal and but the plug has an extra wire
coming from the loom that is hanging in space. It is the same color as the one
in the plug. Is the second wire redundant, used for an other model or are both
wires suppose to join together, or has someone replaced the sensor with the wrong one? Grounding either wire sends the heat gauge to the top. The car also gets a very low, or no reading, on the heat gauge.
