tranny fluid change...

I would like to do a drain and refill of the auto tranny fluid in my '86, but I can't find the drain plug, also I have a 97 Max and I know if you really wanted you can drop the pan and clean the magnets on the pan for the tranny fluid(a real thorough job i guess!), can this be done on the '86 as well? thanks.

There should be a drain plug towards the back center of the car....or at least that is where the one is for my 5-speed. You could drop the pan, but there should be a drain plug.

The drain plug on your RL4F02A Automatic transmission is on the front right behind the bellhousing (facing the grill). It is super easy to get to. The plug takes a 1/2 inch ratchet to remove. Make sure the car is level or facing a downslope to maximize the drain. On mine, I was able to only get about 2-3 quarts out through removal of this plug. I do know the refill capacity is 7.5 quarts, I think.

hey thanks, found the drain plug(before i was looking for more of a hex bolt, probably why i didn't find it, lol) but now i have another question regarding the fluid: FSM says to use type Dexron, all i seem to see in stores is DexronIIE and Dexron III, are they all the same? also the bottles of Dexron IIE and III don't say any viscosity number and FSM recommends 80W-90, can someone help clear this up for me?

Dexron III is okay. They don't make II anymore we have to use three. Its just the updated version of II and it works a little better.
