Dosen't sarin and someone else(sorry If I left anyone out) have a write-up on here for the 5-speed conversion. Can we get it stickied? I'll be reading up on it for awhile.

Before the turbo
Stand alone comes last

There's this link in the 4th gen FAQ's:

http://www.fastmaxima.com/5spd_conversion.htm

I'm sure you've seen it before though.

I can make a write up, I just haven't had time to do one....I also need to put one up of the 5-lug conversion as well. The one turboast4 posted is a good one...oddly our setup are almost identical if you don't include the wiring and clutch lines.

Yeah, Ive seen that one before.
I just didn't know how closely a 2nd gen could follow those instructions. I know there was someone else who did this for the 2nd gen. I just can't find it right now.

Dwayne...your so for asking that question....I should drop kick your a$$!

j/k

To do this job, I'd say it'd take me about 2 days to do it. But I would say budget about 5 days to do the work. Basically the job is labor intensive. It's not too hard, but it is also nice to have at least 2-3 sets of hands.

Cool thanx.
My parents want me to get rid of the max now. I wanted to see what I could do with the trany first. If it stays auto then I will probably keep driving it. If I swap it to manual my lil bro can have a car to learn to drive stick with. Maybe Ill make him help me with this.
I take it that a parts car is needed.
So sarin the 2nd gen bellhousing for the manual is needed but I can use the internals from 85-94 right?
Hopefully I can find a manual trany that will work. The bone yards out here make for slim pickins.

Damn dude, seems like a waste to me if you're going to all the trouble of swapping the tranny and giving it to your younger bro.....

You can use the internals from 85-01, granted you have the 85-94(I believe maybe 91) bellhousing. You will need to transfer some parts, (speed sensor, shift linkage maybe different and make sure you have the correct mounts).

My bro just turned 18 he needs a ride. He hates the max, but a car is a car. I know he'll drive it if its manual. I want to head to mexico and see about getting a trany(auto or manual). They're pretty cheap down there.

Dont the manuals have one more mount, ill check when I get home.

man if your brother dosnt like the max i dont even think his going to take car of it.
and going to mexico for a tranny i dont think it would be a good idea. remember the saying u get what u pay for. im say it not a good idea cuzz some of the ppl in mexico dont relly take good care of the cars, (thats my opinon) just rebild it for like 500-550 dollers thats what they charg in my area. save your self some mony and take it of your self.

The car will still be mine. But he needs it till he gets his ride. I've been telling him how fast it is. I don't go too fast with him in the car. But he needs it and since I just got a car, why not(aside from the trany blowing).
Besides if I get him into fixing it, Ill have one more set of hands to help me.
Trust me he'll take care of the car...or else

My suggestion, is if you do try to find a 5-speed, look for the 89-91 vintage. I have an 89 tranny in it, and I love gearing, as well as better final gear (helps put a little bit more torque down to the ground).

No, but the link posted for the consersion for a 4th gen is very similar to the 2nd gen with a few differences.

You'll need the tranny of course, and the flywheel with clutch and pressure plate, the slave cylinder, lines and clutch master and reservoir, the pedal assembly, the shifter and linkage, the center console trim and boot, and you'll have to splice together the wires that went to the starter lockout switch. A few things I'm not sure on though, you might need the speedo cable too, and the cv shafts should be the same but I'm not positive.

A person skilled with the 2nd gen...2 days tops...maybe even a day. For someone that has some mechanical inclination....but doesn't really know what they are doing...as long as 3 weeks. Average time...5 days.
