Less than 2 years ago I had the transmission rebuilt on my max. Unfortunatly it seems my abuse has already taken its toal. The last week its been slipping out of gear while I was driving and last night I lost first gear completely! So another $2000 tranny rebuild and $800 60,000 mile tune up or $2800 towards a new car? Im leaning toward the new car at this point. Any comments or advice would be a appriciated.
Do you mean your car is popping out of gear? Which gear does it pop out of, I would guess 5th gear? Did you know that Nissan used the same model 5spd tranny from 85-01. If I were in your place look for a newer tranny from a 89-94 maxima. My SE-R has the common 5th gear popout problem but other than that its fine. During your driving do you rev match during downshifts or double clutch at all? Do you powershift or do you use lift throttle WOT upshifts? Unless your rebuild didn't include brand new Nissan parts, there should be no reason for your 5spd to pop out of gear. I believe you should check your shift fork bushings/linkages. Now if you made it a habit of resting your hand on the shifter, you might be able to bend the shift fork alittle which would cause it not to engage the gears fully. But in any case check the local junkyards or try these links and find other 5spd transmissions www.car-part.com,www.copartfinder.com.

Nismo: Actually the gear has been slipping from is first. Then like I said now it won't go into first without a serious fight. I started rev matching downshifts the last 6 or so months. And I use the lift throttle method for high rev upshifting because It seems to shift a lot smoother. Then again you have to remember this is my first car and I learned to drive in it so it took plenty of abuse the first 6 months with bad habits and all. My parents had the tranny rebuilt for the third time just before I got the car. My biggest concern is that even if I could rebuild the tranny cheaply, will it stand up to my abusive high-reving driving habits. Also I plan on further modding it with all kinds of goodies hopefully including NOS someday. I just don't know if this car is the right car for heavy modding.
MaxSE91: My first thought when getting a new car was just that because I really like the third gens. I was unable to find a VE in my area but I found a 5-speed SE with the VG. The other two cars on my wish list is a third gen Supra or a second gen RX7. I am really leaning most towards the RX7 because there is a nice turbo in the area for just over $5000. Whatcha think?
well if your thinking of modding that rx-7 with a turbo then i will have to say get that one, but im not too fond of those older 2nd gens, there just as fast if not slower then us 3rd gen VG's , but with a turbo thats a different story, i still think the max is just a nicer car all around inside and out, probaly more reliable.
Im going to take the car and get the tranny inspected. Wether the damage is minor or severe I will probably end up fixing in and then selling the car. So there is a 75% chance that Ill sell the aftermarket parts: Supersprint muffler, Pilot motorsports muffler (extra), K&N panel filter, unorthodox racing underddrive pully, nissan seatbelt pads and e-brake cover. Then these things will only fit on a 85-86: clear bumper lights, upper and lower mesh grille inserts. But like I said its not certain that I will be parting it out. Ill update everyone as I figure things out.

The 2nd gen RX-7's came in two versions: turbo and non-turbo. The turbo's are somewhat rare as most people didn't want to spend $22k (in 1987).
The 2nd gen RX-7 Turbo is pretty quick out of the box (182hp and 2800 - 2900lbs) Also the 2nd gen Turbo ONLY comes in a 5spd. With some basic mods (exhaust, intake, minor fuel upgrades, and boost controller) you can have well over 200hp @ the wheels. Last time I dyno'ed it was 95 degrees out and I put down 218.7 hp at the wheels and about 200ft lbs of torque. (which is about 250hp - 260hp at the motor)
The RX-7 is not as reliable. PEROID. On a turbo car expect the motor to last 100k - 130k miles. (A lot of people do get more... but I wouldn't EXPECT more) The electronics on the car are known to be quirky, but all can be fixed cheaply if you know how to solder. The tranny is VERY solid and can put up with quite a bit of abuse. My mechanic (who works on mostly RX-7's) has NEVER had to rebuild a 2nd gen turbo transmission. Another disadvantage of these cars is that they are not fun to work on, and screws / bolts are not placed in nice places. Compared to what I'm used to the Maxima has been a DREAM to work on... (so far I've removed the intake manifold, and done a timing belt)
That being said... the RX-7 is STILL MUCH more satisfying than the Maxima. In fact you really cannot compare the two cars, it's like night and day. If you want a sports car - the RX-7 is a pretty good choice. If you want a family car / daily driver with a hint of sport... then the Maxima works.

Well I have done a good share of research on the Rx7 and I am impressed. I am going to fix up my tranny and sell my max ASAP. The TII I am looking at is quite nice. Its got a few basic mods (HKS intake, Racing Beat exhaust, etc) so that adds to the appeal a bit. Plus it has relitivly low mileage.
I will probably have the max for another 3-6 months depending on how long it takes to fix up, strip to stock, and sell.
or you can explain rev matching...sorry, idu and i bought this maxima in texas for 300 and it wont go in first either.....but it drives so nice, 275000 on the odometer
