Sorry Caesar, everytime I get a chance to do it, I get sidetrack doing something else. Hopefully someone here can get a recording of it. I'll try what I can, but knowing how things are going....I'm not sure if I can do it....but if I can, I will.

Right door is open I didn't bother with, same as left except she says right, and fuel level is low I didn't get because I never run it that low. Enjoy!

My girl talks a bit slower than the one I heard on here. And does anyone know if an 1982 has less massages than the 2nd gens. I heard the keys one and the lights are on one, but none of the other ones

My first gen said 'DOOR IS OPEN' , but didn't say left or right like my 2nd gen.

I miss having that. My very first car ever was an '84 with the talking lady. mine spoke slower and was a chime rather than a beep. I think the voice in mine was higher pitched a bit and nicer sounding.

I know this is an old thread but it covers what I am looking for. My father-in-law picked up an 87 recently. The talking lady like to tell you that the key is in when it is not. Plus I don't know if it says anything about the doors. Does the key have to be in for it to tell you about the doors/brake/lights...? Are there any schematics that I can use to troubleshoot with? He is a mechanic but not into the electrical side of things. I was trained in the Coast Guard to work on avionics so I know a thing or two about electrical problems.

Yep mine is still up and running, can't get videos right now, due to a broken DL shes sitting with a dead battery.

you can put new speakers in and keep it but can't run high power to the speakers due to it shuts down and the speaker will not work until the power is turned down (some sort of short protection I'm sure).

loadsdrums: the doors and brake will not say anything unless you start to drive the lights should say it if the key is off, I'll look in my FSM for my 85. the box should be under the drivers seat (irrc) with wires going to a box behind the radio, since 2nd gens have a speedo cable going from the tranny to the dash, the cluster turns it into a electronic signal that goes to the ECU and to the box for the voice, so if the door and brake are not working I would check that wiring first, unless your dome light is not working then check the door switchs

Thanks for the quick response vernk. The main issue at the moment is that when you open the driver side door she says that the key is in the ignition even though it is not. Does it mean that the ignition has a broken/stuck contact or is it disconnected? I haven't taken a multimeter to it yet. I was wondering if anyone has come across this before.

mine does it a once in a while. theres az switch in it usually its not turned all the way

if your key is old and worn it will come out of the ignition before it is turned all the way off, so just make sure it is all the way off before pulling key out, just a thought

Mine still works too! although i've noticed that it works sometimes but not others. my turn signals stopped working too. fuse is good but i don't hear the relay clicking infact i can't even find the relay. wondering it its associated with the same problem as the voice working on and off

Nevermind guys.... I changed the relay and it didn't fix the turn signals. Problem ended up being a faulty hazard switch. Took the steering column apart... Fiddled with the switch and now my turn signals work but at the expense of my hazard switch disconnected.

The lady works no problem now also... It might be just be a fluke!

the nice voice box can be instald in your 71 dat. all you need is the voice box which sits behind the center consaul under the radio, thats all thats need it and for you to have some electrical knolage. i have the diagram but its for the voice box of a z31 but there the same plugs so it should work. ill try to load it up if any one is interested. or you guys can find it one line some wher thats wher i found it i just kept it saved ....

that good info, but from what i saw in the diagram. the diagram is for the older bulky voice box. i talking about the voice box that came in the 1985 -1988....

hers the instructions to hook up the newer voice box to a z32 (voice box came from a z31 but same as newe maximas) ther wher suppos to be pix but i dont know how to load them since i saved it all in microsoft word....


Installation of Z31 Voice Alert System into Z32

There are two kinds of people in the world: those who loved
the voice alert system on the older Z’s, and those that hated
it. “*****in’ Betty”, as it was affectionately called, appeared
in most Z31 and Maxima models, from 1984 through 1986, and
spoke five warnings:
• Lights on
• Left door open
• Right door open
• Parking brake on
• Fuel level low.
Here are the installation steps for a 1995 Z32:
1. Remove Betty from the donor car with the associated
connector and at least six inches of wire. Betty is located
above and behind the ECU in the passenger kick panel, behind
the insulation. She is just slightly larger than a pack of
cigarettes, 3.5 inches (85mm) by 4.25 inches (105mm). She
is the metal box next to the speaker, shown in the test setup
below.
2. Test Betty. From the Figure 1 below, identify the wires for
ground, speaker, Lights On, and driver’s door. Connect the
ground wire to the negative terminal of your car battery.
Connect the speaker wires to a test speaker. Connect the
positive terminal of the battery to the Lights On wire. Then
by grounding the driver’s door wire to the negative battery
terminal, you should hear the Lights On warning.

3. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
4. Remove the plastic pieces from around the steering column
by removing the six screws underneath. Also remove the
upholstered piece under the steering column.

7. Remove both door sills and the driver’s side kick panel.
8. Remove the panels behind the seats. In a 2+2, you
must remove the panels that expose the wiring of the door
switches.

9. Remove the console pieces to expose the
emergency brake, and remove the package tray to expose
the fuel gauge wiring.
10. Locate the voice warning system box on the cubby
lid of console while doing the wiring. This allows you to get
the wiring to the approximate correct lengths.

11. Electrical connections. To tap into the wires, use
crimp tee connectors or solder the connections and cover
with electrical tape or shrink tubing. 16 AWG wire would be a
good choice for the electrical connections as it is much
heavier than the wiring on Betty, and easier to handle. The
tap connectors for 18-22 AWG will work with the heavier 16
AWG wire, if you use pliers to push the metal connector down
on the wires. You may also wrap this connection with
electrical tape just to make sure. Route all wires so they will
be hidden when everything is back in place, of course.

12. Mount a speaker in a convenient location such as
behind the driver’s seat. A five inch, four ohm speaker was
used in this installation. You may chose to place it in a test
location while wiring, before you locate it permanently.

13. Remove the light switch pod by removing the two
screws under it. You may also want to remove the
upholstered panel under the steering wheel for ease of routing
wires.
14. Lights on. To activate this warning these conditions
must be met::
i. The key must be removed from the ignition.
ii. The driver’s door needs to be open.
iii. The headlights or parking lights must be on.
a. Identify the red/blue wire at the ignition switch.
This wire carries 12 volts only when the key is in the ignition.
Tap this wire and connect to the blue wire with red bands,
labeled Ignition Key on Betty’s connector. See Figure 1 for
connector wire layout. See Figure 2 for Ignition Switch.
b. Tap the green/red wire from the light pod, Figure 3,
and connect to the red/green wire on Betty’s connector,
labeled “Lights On” in Figure 1.

c. Tap the non-black wire coming from the driver’s
door switch, and connect it to Betty’s wire labeled Driver’s
Door in Figure 1.
d. Connect the speaker wires from Betty to the
speaker.
e. Ground the black wire from Betty by crimping a ring
terminal on the wire, and attaching it under the one of the
screws attached to the car body. Reconnect
the battery, turn on the lights, take key out of ignition, and
open the driver’s door…you should now hear Betty saying:
Lights On!

15. Fuel Level Low. Tap the thin blue wire coming from
the fuel gage under the package tray, and connect to the
fuel wire on Betty.
16. Left Door Open/Right Door Open. Near the right
front headlight, locate the alternator harness connector (A3
for AT cars, and A4 for MT cars) that contains the blue speed
sensor wire, Figure 4. It is the only connector in this location
with a blue wire (at least on 95 Z’s). Unhook this connector
to make tapping the wire easier. Tap the blue wire, and
connect to the speed sensor wire on Betty. You may run the
connection wire along the driver’s side of the engine, across
the back of the engine, and into the passenger compartment
through the hole under the clutch master cylinder that is used
for the hood release mechanism. If you want your installation
to look like OEM, cover the wire with black wire cover tubing.
Secure this wire/tubing with tie wraps. Also tap the non-
black wire from the passenger door switch, and connect it to
the passenger door wire on Betty.

17. Parking Brake On. Tap the wire coming from the
emergency brake switch, and connect to the Betty wire
labeled Parking Brake.
18. Tape Betty’s radio wires individually, as they are not
used.
19. Permanently install Betty by attaching her
behind/between the seats under the waterfall piece, Figure 5.

20. Replace all interior panels removed.
21. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
22. Listen to Betty. Figure 6.
23. Have a beer.
24. By the way, if you are a real geek…you can find the
connectors under the kick panels that contain most of the
needed wires. However, the connectors have many, thin
wires, making tapping much more difficult. But if you insist…
check out the electrical section of the service manual.
25. Credits. I received a lot of the basic information in
this write-up from Twinturbo.net member, Shift For Brains,
which is what I felt like after trying to decipher the wiring
diagrams in the service manual.

if she only says it once your not to bad off, if she says it twice your getting pretty low, if she says it twice and then again twice shortly after you better hope there is a gas station somewhat close. you can also watch the low fuel light if it fades in and out while stopping and going thats when she will say it once but once it gets to the point when it's on all the time thats when she starts really yelling at you

I think some of the canadian-market cars came with french iircc... I'd only assume they did a jdm w/ the japanese language.....

Mine worked fine until the what I believe the alty went south, battery drained and was towed home. Installed a new rebuilt alty and remembered installing the one coming out 90,000 miles ago. The windows, including the moon roof, turn signals, radio, and dash gauges don't work. And if the dash lights are on at night (more visible) and you open the door the dash lights go out. Anyone have a schematic.? Haynes doesn't have one. Thanks
