Please help w/87 maxima problem

I have a problem: When I start my car it starts right up, then the rpms dive for a minute and there is alot of putting from the exhaust for lack of a better term. As the car warms up it goes back up to normal idle but the exhaust continues to put intermitently at idle. When I give it gas it runs great but when it returns to idle, more rough putting from the exhaust. I have a new coil, all injectors have been cleaned and checked at the shop, new plugs, wires, timing belt cap, rotor and the distributor has been cleaned and checked.
Can anyone help me get to the bottom of this problem?

you may want to run over vacuum lines and see if you have a leak. if its a small hole they may be sealing up when they get hot. also if they are fine then when is the last time the o2 sensor was replaced? they say they only last until 30,000 or so but if its been more then 60,000 it may be due. a quiet ping every once in a while from the exhaust when warm is normal. also if you can try to take a look at the cylander head temperature sensor. its located between the timing belt covers on the right side of the water pump. its hard to get to without removing the top timing belt covers but you may be able to get a long rod and poke at it to see if its lost contact. if you look down beside the distributer cap you may be able to see it. its common for the connection to corrode and lose contact.

I had a similiar problem when I first got my 87....I replaced the AAV/air bypass valve and it fixed the problem....also its a good idea to go ahead and replace your vacuum lines.

I have the exact same problem... there is a person on cardomain that has a way to fix it with just screwing a screw into the aiv or avv vavle i forget which one it is... but the vavle is on the back of the intake collecter and its shaped kind of like a tordado laying sideways with a plug at the end of it.. lol.. The valve is there to let extra air in past the throttle to keep the rpms up a little bit until warm.. but once it warms up the springs relax and close the valve back off. Does it only do it when its cold?

the fix that you are refering to is in a sticky at the top of our forum...I looked at that and decided to buy a new one....I got it at importedcarparts.com for $65
