Cold-Air Intake

I want to install a cold air intake on my '85 Maxima. The problem is, where the air enters, it goes through the filter, then it gets routed through a maze of tubes.

I am wondering if these tubes are absolutly necessary. On my old Honda CRX it was simply a direct entrance to the intake on the engine.

I am curious if anyone else has installed a cold-air Intake system on their own 2nd gen. Possibly they could tell me how I could go about setting mine up.

I posted something on the 2nd gen yahoo group about this. The maze isn't needed, and it probably hurts the performance more than it is good. I would run a straight pipe to the maf with the neccessary connections for all the vaccum lines (there are about 4 of them), then run a pipe straight to the area in front of the wheel that is guarded with a splash shield with a slim cone filter on the end of it.

Yeah, I think the yahoo forums are too annoying to post on and read who replies. I was looking at your cardomain pictures, I think I see what you mean. I will be looking more into this in the next few weeks.

Also, do you think you could send me a better picture of your CAI on your '86?

I was looking at the pictures, It looks like I could prolly do that, but I'd prolly need a better picture of how its hooked up :P

Thanks

lol, you "would" do that?

Sarin, I think the reason they made that maze was to keep the intake noise minimal, dont you think?

Are you talking about the stock diameter for the thing known as "the mid-pipe" or the mid-pipe in the car now? I have the stock resonator box etc, and your welcome to it if you like. It's makes a very good portable toilet that you can hook up to your passenger seats so whenever the driver punches 1st gear, all the crap in thier pants have a place to go!

me or you?! You seemed to be enjoying the VE power a little too much.

Mid-pipe. What you have now. I need the tube sizes and locations. I don't have any more 3" pipe other than the one I showed you. All or most of that will be used for the maf-back portions. But I think I can get my hands on a straight 3" pipe pretty easy. Just cut to length and weld.

Yeah, I am going with a 3" pipe for the mid-pipe. You would need a reducer going to the mid-pipe to TB, but that radiator hose stuff your using should work fine. I think you can get away with 2.75" also.
