exhaust setup?

I am looking into getting a custom exhaust for my 87 SE. I am wondering what you guys recomend? I am not looking for a pre fabed cat back (i.e. pacesetter) I am going to have one made at a local shop. I was hoping you guys could give me some advice on a few things....what size pipe (2 1/4 or 2.5)? Is there anything we can hollow out such as pre cats in our factory exhaust? And also what is a good muffler (and when I say good when dealing with my 87 I am kinda talking about cheap/best bang for the buck...I would like something with a little growl but def. nothing close to being loud. Any advice would be appreciated.

Nothing over 2.5" that's for sure. I run 2.25" on mine because the outlet of the Y is about that big. The key issue for a quiet exhaust is:
1) Thick wall pipe. ie.. 14ga or thicker
2) Non-straight though muffler. A 5-gen 2000+ muffler would be ideal. It's what I use. I hear the Greddy or maybe a Borla would be nice. But a little pricey.

You don't have precats. Also your downpipes have one of the better designs I've seen. Alot better than the 3-gen+ designs, that's for sure!

thanks for getting back to me....I was thinking I would probably run 2.25 on this one....2.5 would probably be over kill on this motor N/A with bolt ons. As far as the muffler is concerned I am def. looking for something that will be under $50....I have the greddy cat back system on my 4th gen, but that cost as much as my 87....I would like to get by with compete exhaust for around $150 or under....there is a guy here that put full exhaust on my brothers car....all the pipe, 2 mufflers, and labor for $75. He just does not put cats in...hahahah....any other advice would be helpful, I would really like to hear some cheaper muffler alternatives that have a little grunt to them. Thanks

Probably some type of generic "turbo muffler" when you are talking about that cheap of pricing. Just make sure it's not a straight though type. No ss steel as it's more expensive

Speaking of exhaust
Mine is filled with carbon deposits from running rich. Is there any way to clean it out, like a dip or something?

Mine turns a little black too....but thats normal for carbon to deposit on the tips like that. Just take a clay bar to the tip, get all the junk off, and just clean the tip periodically.

What about for the bumper and trunk. Know of anything that will get carbon off those.
Already tried soap and water.

Some heavy duty solvents probably. Probably like an engine degreaser, etc. Though becareful because that stuff could/will eat at your paint's finish. I would try using a claybar first and see what that yields.
