shift ****

Has anyone with an automatic 87 Max ever changed the shift ****? I'm was looking at trying to upgrade mine but I cant see how you get it apart? I loosend the few screws I saw but something was still holding it and the FSM doesnt show how to take it apart. If anyone has done it could you tell me what you did? Thanks

I believe once you take those screws off, the **** unscrews itself the the shift lever. Other than that, I'm unsure how it comes off.

I don't know if an 87 **** is the same as my 85, but I only had to take out two small phillips screws at the base of the **** and off it came.

I thought it would be that easy but it felt like something was still holding it, and I just didnt want to muscle it and mess something up!

Wierd...maybe it was also held on by adhesive? That's tough one to call since I don't have an auto. On my car, all I have to do is unscrew the shift **** and it comes right off. :P

mine came off with the removal of two little screws too, actually it scared me a little cuz the button sprung out at me pretty fast, other than that it was pretty easy (1986 maxima)
