Auto - 5 spd swap?

I have an 87 auto and I have heard from many people that a manual tranny in these cars have closer ratios and shorter gears so... Is it possible to do an auto tranny to manual tranny swap. And if so how much would it cost if I already had a manual tranny?

Well, it really depends. You can definately do the swap, but you would have to add components, you may have to switch ECU's because I believe the autos have an AT controller to help with the electronic overdrive. Other than that, you may have to do some drilling and cutting for a clutch pedal. As far as a price, its really up in the air since I dunno of anyone that has done it on our cars yet.

The swap itself is easy, but you will need more than just the tranny. The front crossmember is different, and the tranny mount is different as well. The flywheel will need to be swapped in to replace the flexplate inplace now. The clutch and brake pedals and clutch master cylinder are all practically bolt in. The ECU should be changed, but it will run without. The timing curves, etc., are a little different. You will need the interior console finishing pawl, shift lever etc... Also, the CV Shafts are different, as they have slightly different splines than the auto.

The ideal situation would be to have an entire parts car, as this will save you tons. While you're pulling the crossmember out, etc, you should replace the motor and tranny mounts, the rear main seal in the engine, and take the op to install new CV shafts and a new clutch and pressure plate, and either replace or rebuild the master and slave cylinder. This should help ensure the swap goes as smooth as possible, and prevents you from having to tear it all down again, later...

With the parts car, you can get everything except the clutch, pressure plate, CV Shafts, and mounts...the flywheel should be resurfaced, though.
