Engine Whine on 1st Gen

I've got a engine whine on a 87 with 60K miles. The whine is loudest when cold, varies with engine speed, sounds like a combination grinding-whine and comes from the center of of the accessory side of the engine. The alternator was replaced about a year ago. It didn't sound like it was coming the power steering pump. There are no leaks or other symptoms other than no fast idle (bad air regulator). Any other ideas or typical problems?

Thanks,

Perry

Yes, already done- Thanks. I'm thinking it could be the accessory belt tensioner pulley bearing

Lets see. You say it comes seems to be coming from the accessories area of the motor, power steering is fine. I would check a couple of other things. Check all your belts, make sure the surface on the belt that goes around the pulleys are in good condition, not shiny cracked etc. Next check the A/C compressor clutch, these can be notorious for making strange noises. I would also check your alternator. Though you said it can be replaced, from experience, an alternator can go bad at anytime. If all those check out, I would check the bearings on all the accessory pulleys. It could be that one of those have a bad bearing and it could make a noise someone what similar to what your are describing.

Hope this helps.
