RPM goes high but does not speed up
My 1993 maxima was working very well until today. I was driving 70mi/hr on the highway and then I had to slow down.... when I tried to speed up again the car could not go more than 45mi/hr even if the RPM goes to about 5000!!
The car now seems to be less powerfull than before. it used to speed up faster....
I tried to set over drive to OFF position inside the city and drive... it drives OK but I can feel it does not spped up as it used to be.
I heard about SELF DIAGNOSIS CODE. does any any has an idea about that code?
I checked the transmission oil. it seems to be OK. the level is ok and it does not smell burned.
i will appreciate any help
Thanks

This happened to my 93 Max, It was the transmission, it was slipping. had to get it replaced. The thing was i had it mess up in Georgia and i live in Jersey. Had to drive it back to Nashville with out trying to stop all the way or i wouldnt be able to start her up again.
If it aint the transmission, then yea.. check that throttle cable. Good Luck

yeah the tranny starts to go around that milage. get ready to fork over some nice bills for a new or rebuilt tranny. i doubt it's the throttle cable though since his engine can rev to 5000 rpm. if it was the throttle cable, he shouldn't be able to do that.

replace the tranny man. take it from me and everyone else on here cuz i just rebuilt mine about 6 months ago and it just blew out again 2 weeks ago. i spent $350 on a '94 auto tranny with 65,000 miles on it. right now its getting swapped out for the '94 tranny. so get that taken care of.

How can I know the type of the transmission I need?
A.T., SOHC
A.T., DOHC, thru 9/93, locking differential
A.T., DOHC, from 10/93 (locking differential)
A.T., DOHC, thru 9/93, non-locking differential
does it hurt if I use a different one from the currentyl installed? which one is better?

about which tranny to use, there's a tranny code in the engine bay on the firewall (something like RE404A). the VG maximas (SOHC) shared the same auto tranny as the stanzas. a rebuild will cost anywhere from 1500-3000 depending on warranty and reputation of the shop. i paid 1500 with a 6 month 6,000 mile warranty. i had no problems until my accident about 50,000 miles later.

The gear is RE4F02A (SOHC)
someone offered me to replace it with a used one "good condition" for $800
What bothers me is that the milage on it is 130k
is it possible to have a good 130k transmission???? I do not feel confortable replacing 140k transmission for a 130k one. Am I wrong? the guy is saying he is giving me a good deal. I like to believe that but 130k is too much. please advise... thanks

How can I tell if the problem is not a clutch problem? someone is telling me the peoblem is not necessarily a trannny.
The car shifts 1-2-3 but not to 4. also the rpm goes very high before chaning from 1 to 2 or from 2 to 3.
Also I do not understand why it drivers better when O/D is OFF although it does not shift beyond 3 in both cases.
Does anyone have an idea on how much the remanufactured transmission from a Nissan dealer cost? they close over the weekend and I should wait until Monday.
How many hours does it take usually to replace the transmission? just an estimate.... thanks guys.

First off, I would NOT put in a tranny which has 130K miles on it, unless it had been rebuilt at 129K mi or it was dirt cheap (800 is not dirt cheap).
Anything from the dealer is going to be $$$, especially a rebuilt tranny. They most likely wouldn't sell you one, rather they would rebuild your current one for like 3000, which is your car's worth (more or less).
To replace a tranny would probably take a day at most. To rebuild it would be a couple of days. Took mine about 3 days to rebuild, but I'm sure they didn't work round the clock on it either. Call independent shops and check their prices; describe your symptoms and see what they think it is.

The problem turned out to be bad clutches. The are deep inside the transmission so I basicly need to replace or rebuild the transmission.
Nissan is saying they have remanufactured transmissions for $2400 plus labour!! why do they care about selling a transmission which is more expensive than the car itself?! anyway...
I am going to rebuild it for $1100
Thank you all

If you do the labor yourself, buy a cheap junkyard tranny and put it in. Then try rebuilding your tranny on your own I'm guessing it will probably be about $350 for the rebuild if you do it yourself (including tools), but then again I'm used to domestic trannys. Either way buy the parts from Internetautomar.... he has very good prices and it's really really hassle free.

Trannnyyyyyyyyyyy goneeeeeeeeeeee at 148k, stranded on the LIE exit 48 westbound while going back home ( Brooklyn ) from school.
Price to tow car back to Brooklyn= $175
Temperature outside while freezing my A$$ inside the car = 30 F
Price to have Transmission Rebuilt = $975
Look on my face when price was mentioned = Priceless
Should be done this Thursday , will update the situation.
