Is High-Mileage oil required for vehicles with over 100k miles?
my girlfriend drives a Sentra with about 107k on it. so far she has been using regular Penzoil 10w30. the guy at Jiffy Lube told her to switch to Penzoil high-mileage. is this necessary? if yes, then what grade should be used? one of my friends uses 10w40 high-mileage oil though regularly he used to use 10w30.
i have been using Amsoil 5w30 synthetic in my Maxima since 30k and i have not even crossed 50k miles on it, so i dont know anything about this high-mileage thingee.

The person at Jiffy Lube is trying to make Jiffy Lube more money. High mileage oils are by and large marketing hype to get you to pay $.40 quart more (off the shelf price) for basically the same exact oil.
If the Sentra has had regular oil changes (i.e. 5k or less intervals), then there is no need to worry about the engine's condition. If so, look in the additive sticky post near the top of this forum for details on Auto-Rx, an ester-based cleaning agent that actually works.
And do not put anything higher than a 10W/30 in the Sentra.

thanks a lot fellas....i told her the same thing, but she thinks the Jiffy Lube guys know better than me since its their job! so i wanted some other expert opinions from you guys to show her.

I saw the high mileage oil by Valvoline and decided to give it a try since I use their regular oil (Explorer) and synthetic (Maxima). Here were the results:
1st oil change: Nothing, still a drip on the driveway
2nd oil change: Engine sounds quieter up too 5000 mile change. It used to be quite noisy just before an oil change. Still have a drip but it is smaller.
3rd oil change: Engine even quieter all the way up to 5000 and the oil drip is now gone. Also, I had a lot of lifter "ticking" as the car warmed up...I don't notice that anymore either.
That is my experience. The heavy cleaning and the "seal swell" additive worked great in my experience. If you're not having any problems (leaking or noisy lifters) I would stick with what you have.

I've seen people state the same thing using Marvel Mystery oil or Restore, but that doesn't mean it's a long term solution or good for your engine.
A real world analysis-proven approach involves treatment with Auto-Rx, an ester based cleaner that works over time with one or two dino oil changes.

My family has experience with several generations of Taurus', one of which is running over 300k. You may be interested to know that the very engine I was referring to is an update of a german engine Ford uses. Does German =

Impressive results w/ that Integra engine. I'll have to try some of that stuff myself to get more gunk out of my VQ once my bro's Max is mine again.

The Ford 4.0L/244 cid is the big brother in a family of Ford V6 engines that were built in Cologne, Germany, and have been used in domestic Fords since the early ’70s. The original 2.6L engine was replaced by the 2.8L, which was upgraded to the 2.9L and then finally bored and stroked to make it into the 4.0L that was used in the Rangers, Aerostars and Explorers starting in 1990. It was replaced by a SOHC engine from this same family at the end of model year 2000.
Gone were the two Essex V6 engines. These were replaced with the more efficient German based Cologne V6's, (although South African models retained the Essex engines) in 2300cc and 2800ccand with the Bosch K-Jetronic Fuel injection system becoming an option on the 2.8 Ghia Model
