Fixed my nitrous - went to the track

My car has been pretty weak the last two times I visited a track. The problem was the fuel solenoid on the first stage (75-shot). Highway tests showed a A/F of 15.6 when spraying the first stage! - and the plugs looked badly burned... I changed out the bad solenoid, blew out the lines and nozzle, then a highway test showed the A/F to be 12.4 - much better. DA was good - 1000', DA was 1446. Air temp 59*, Hum 42%, Baro 29.82.

So, off to Heartland Park last night for a T-n-T. I made three passes - discovered I still have a shifter problem that requires me to lift for the shift, then get back into spray, but the car now pulls hard again. I haven't scanned the slips yet, but here are the important numbers.

........75-shot-only.........75-shot+some..100-shot.....75-shot+some..100-shot
60'....1.765...................1.777.............. .................1.780
1/8....8.275...................8.218................ ...............8.218
MPH...84.16...................83.72............... ................86.06
1/4....12.854.................12.671................ .............12.593
MPH...108.95.................112.14............... ..............114.54

In the third pass, I was 1/2 car behind a 12.65-ET Camaro until I got into third gear, then I picked up at least 3 car lengths on him for the win. My 3.5 does make some serious HP. and those 60' times are my PB..

The shifter still has problems, and I'm still bouncing off the rev limiter and nitrous window switch on the 1-2 shift, but with that fixed, times could get better. I'm going to hate to throw this engine away.... Oh yeah, I switched to Lucas Semi Synth Racing Oil for the transmission - it does help.

http://www.lucasoil.com/products/dis...tid=9&loc=show

Overall, a good evening...

EDIT 10-04-2009 Here are the scanned time slips:

Yup, sprayed the 75-shot right at launch. Stalled up to 2800 and hit it at the last yellow.

Tires and wheels were M&H 24.5x8.5x15 slicks on AR 8" rims... obviously they can hook up well. Since I was going into 4th just before the traps, I think I'll go to a larger slick - like 10x26x15 or 12x26x15 M&H. The taller tire should prevent going into 4th gear at the traps.

So was this just a 75 shot or was 75 just the first stage and you had a larger shot in the 2nd stage? Nice 60's.

The first stage is set to be a 75-shot, and it triggers at WOT. The second stage is jetted for a 100-shot and it triggers from a floor switch.

The custom transmission shifter triggers off a MSD 8969 switch set at 6400. There is also a manual "shift up" button. The nitrous window switch is another MSD set to 2700-6500 for spray. I've had to shift early at the 1-2 shift because - I think - that the MSD switches can't respond fast enough to rapid changes in RPM. The car hits fuel cut very fast in 1st, and the engine "stutters" between spray and fuel cut, so I've been manually shifting early. This new quirk cost me a transmission in May.

The 60' times blew me away. It was a good night to launch. (and I really enjoyed walking away from the Camaro)...

Hi, Juiced - yeah, I knew something was wrong there, but I didn't have any spare parts with me, so I limped through the event. No excuses - so when I got a chance and pulled the plugs, it was obvious that the engine went very lean. I finally got a chance to dig into it and wound up changing out the 1st stage fuel solenoid. That made it better.

Maybe I'll drag the car to the Wichita Import event later this month.

Yeah - 250-shot -........ yeah.....

It's kinda hard to believe that the '02 stock-with-eBay-cams engine is still smoking the slicks - or even still running, considering what it's been through over the last two years.

How about upping the second stage up to 150-shot? That would be a combined 225-shot. That uses a 62+33 jet combination (I'll double-check that), and I have those. Daymn, I think I'll do that before the season is gone.

Hummmm... The Dyno-tune jet calculator says 58+34 and for 175 = 62+36. I'll dig some more. I should get this right - or identify all my available jets and see what I can put together.

EDIT = looks like the calculators say a 62+36 combination is a 150-shot to the wheels. Think I'll go with this one.

Here's the time slips I mentioned earlier. The first pass was just with the 75-shot - and I lifted while the tranny was shifting. I played with the second stage on the second and third pass - more so on the third pass.

I wish I could do this again! I guess all the planets were in alignment that evening - it was 59* for the second pass.

If you go with some bigger slicks, I would go with some 26x8.5-15 ET Drags. Should be a good tire for you. No need for the 10 inch wide.

Think about the Cosworth-component new engine. I'll need the larger slicks.

This is with the old almost-stock 2002 engine (Ebay cams, headers, SSIM). It has taken a lot of abuse and apparently still makes some WHP.
