Launching an automatic (NA 300zx)

I was at the track this past weekend with a buddy of mine who has a NA, automatic, 300zx. Last year he ran easy 14.9's. This year he added a different catback (had one before) and 1 piece driveshaft.

For whatever reason this year he is bogging badly off the line. I rode with him once. He's brake-torquing as much as he can, and flooring it once he goes. However, the engine hangs around 2000 RPM for a minute and he comes off the line with no power. I told him if he had a 5sp I'd launch it at around 4500 RPM, but of course he can't do that.

He asked me for tips, and not having an auto I couldn't really help him. Is there anything he can do, or does he just need more power?

Tell him not to brake torque but to flash stall instead. Then have him advance his timing from 15* to 19*. Also a tranny cooler wouldn't hurt either.
