Pretty impressed with my stock 96 SE 5spd times
The car:
1996 SE 5sp, stock, 15x6" stock rims with 215/60/16 Firestone tires
Tire pressure 20F/35R
No spare tire or jack remove
Weight 3060lbs w/o driver 3215lbs w/driver
Removed stock (dirty) air filter
The weather:
78 degrees
93% humitity
Baro 29.98
The track:
Moroso Motorsports Park, West Palm Beach, Florida
16 feet above sea level
First car to make a pass on a nicely prepped track. VHT was sprayed the first 10-20 feet on the starting line
The times:
2.25 60' 15.19 @ 90.25
I got 9 passes at the track tonight, so my first time with the car, I learned alot. I would launch the car at 2500-2700 rpm with very little clutch slip. The car would wheel hop some, 3-4 "hops" before putting full power to the ground, never could iron down a non-hop clutch without bog. Any other higher RPM launches would smoke the clutch. No burnout was used. I did notice a slightly less then then normal snap on the shift in between gears, probably due to a hot, 88,000 mile, stock clutch. Shifts were done at 6500-6700 rpms. I think the stock suspension is letting the car hop. A buddy of mine would watch the car launch and the rear suspension would squat hard, which would allow for immediate wheel hop.
I did back up the time with a 2.27, 15.20 @ 90.28.
I'm preety impressed with the times of the car. Its best MPH of the night was a 90.49. I'm thinking I can squeeze a 15.0x with better weather and maybe the loss of the spare tire and jack.
Are these times inline with other 5 sp stock Max's?

Re: Pretty impressed with my stock 96 SE 5spd times
Way to go, with a little work, ypipe/intake you could be a nice 14sec car..
BTW- post this in teh timeslips forum. If u can scan in your timeslip it would be good. Not to many people are geoing to call BS on you, lol... if it was an 11-12sec maybe some flags would be poppin' up!

Traps are a little low, times are good. I think your traps suffered as a result of your shift points. With a stock 4th gen, optimal shift points are redline, 6300, 6000. You should be finishing in 4th. The power these cars put down drops off severely after about 5800 rpm.
You're up among the best in terms of stock times, try out some different shift points (like the ones I suggested) and you may just see 14s stock like a few of us have

Shift between 6000-6300? Hmm never thought to do that. I did notice it drop off in power after 6000. Hmmmm
You guys don't think my traps will suffer if I shift into 4th? I am going through the traps somewhere over 5500 in 3rd.
Damn, I want to go back now
Anyone ever seen a 14 sec stock 4th gen 5 spd?

i got a 14.8 with just intake....but i guess that isnt stock shift points are as follows:
1st-2nd = 6500 (or redline)
2nd-3rd = 6200
3rd-4th = 6000
using this method i have never trapped below 91mph. i have yet to run with full exhaust and suspension.

Yeah... me
I ran 14.8 @ 93 stock, VeeTec ran 14.7 @ 92 stock, Sin ran 14.8 @ 93 stock. There's probably a couple others out there that did too that I don't know about. We all shift into 4th. Try those shift points I mentioned and I bet you your times go down and traps go up.

I was doing lift throttle shifts when I was stock. Now I do powershifts on the 2-3 shift and 3-4 shift, I lift during the 1-2 shift however because I get too much wheelspin if I don't.
All this goes out the window tomorrow though, as it will be the first time for me with slicks. Who knows what will work best then, I just hope I don't shred my tranny Knock on wood.

Hey, this car is my first 5spd so I still have lots to learn. Not that I'm about to go out and try, but how do you shift w/o the clutch? I can envision physically, but mechanically, what happens?
Also, any general tips for going to the track other than the above-recommended shift points?

You can't up-shift without the clutch, don't try it you will destroy your transmission. You can downshift without the clutch but that's a whole other matter.

I have a 95 SE 5-speed and ran a 15.07 and power-shifted at redline in 1-2 then at 6400 from 2-3 and never had to shift into 4th. if i shift into fourth will it better my time and increase my trap speeds?

You can upshift clutchless,Maybe not in the maxima but yes you can in some cars my uncle does it and I can do it in his car, but I never have been able to get it to work right in the maxima, it all has to do with getting the syncros in line.

I broke 14's and shift into 4th as well. I still need more practice to get my 60 foot down though, and good brisk weather. All my times were in humid and hot weather.

Actually you can do the 2-3 upshift without the clutch in the max. I've done it before, but I haven't had the balls to try it in other gears, I've heard it wont work in others and I don't want to break another transmission finding out.

I think it has alot to do with the car being front wheel drive, I can get it out of gear very easily without the clutch in every gear, but I still haven't been able to get it to go back in. I plan on doing a little research into this because I would like to be able to upshift clutchless on the track.

Sure you can upshift w/out the clutch in the Max. 2-3, 3-4 and 4-5. It's all about timing. I do it all the time w/out grinding gears.

I'm really interested in knowing how to do this with out screwing my tranny, I know the concept but can't seem to time getting it into gear right, any pointers?

The one thing I'm unsure of is if it's harmful to the tranny or not....

As Long as your not grinding gears the tranny will be fine.
